Cobham Festival - 3rd November 2013
U8 Farnham Pumas roar into their first ever fianl!
The Pumas played their 3rd festival of the 2013/2014 season at Cobham, putting into practice the lessons from training in recent weeks. The standard of play from the Farnham team and its opponents was high, with some great tagging and passing seen.
Farnham opened their campaign with a close fought 6-4 win against Chobham. First try of the day was scored by Grover following a good straight run. This was quickly consolidated by tries from Frost and Lumb who used change of direction to fool the opposition. Try of the day has to be given to Porter, who received the ball from the whistle and ran straight down the wing to score his first try for the club. The team then tagged well and held their ground, for Black to run in 2 tries close to the end of the game.
The second pool game, against Sutton and Epsom, was also a tight game ending in a 4-4 draw. Wyndenbach followed Porters example from the first game and, after being passed the ball from the whistle, ran straight in for the first Farnham try. Farnham then tagged well and held their opposition off for a while, until bad passing allowed Sutton and Epsom to equalise and extend their lead. A sequence of good passes, led by Auger allowed Frost to score Farnham’s 2nd try, quickly followed by Lumb and Wyndenbach to even the score.
The 3rd game was another closely fought battle against Cobham, culminating in a 5-4 victory to Farnham. Teamwork was paramount in this game, with better passing and support all round. Frost and Wydenbach both ran in tries following a period of good passing and some great running by Black and Lumb. Cobham fought back in the 2nd half, and after a series of turn-overs Buckley ran in Farnham’s 3rd try. More good passing and changes of direction allowed Frost and Lumb to run in a further try each. Two wins and a draw saw the Farnham Pumas top their group and go through to their first ever semi-final.
The semi-final, against Guildfordians, allowed Farnham to play a great passing game and tries were scored by straight runs from all involved. Following a period of good defending play, Black and Frost scored another try each; and Donnachie scored twice for Farnham in plays which involved the whole team and great tagging. The end result of this hard fought game was a 4-2 win for Farnham, putting them into the cup final against Cobham.
The Farnham boys played a great game in the final, but were outmatched by a stronger Cobham side than they’d met earlier in the day. There was some good tagging, and the Farnham side were able to turn-over the play a couple of times, leading to Frost scoring the only Farnham try of the game. However, the speed of the Cobham players was too much for the tired Puma squad, and the final whistle blew for a 6-1 Cobham win; a score which does not reflect how well the Pumas all played in this game.
Overall the Farnham Pumas had a fantastic day, showed great team spirit and sportsmanship, and came away as runners up. Player of the festival, as voted for by the parents and coaches, was Donnachie.
