Sutton & Epsom taught us a real lesson in simple rugby.

After 2 wins from 2 Farnham approached this game with some confidence and as it turned out, a considerable complacency! Sutton taught us a real lesson in simple rugby : win the contact, be first to the breakdown, repeat until space appears and then go wide. It was a game plan that Farnham had wanted to fulfil themselves but in truth we never played any rugby until a 15 minute passage in the second half when we retained possession and a series of phases led to a robust run through the centre by Tom McGinn who dived over under the posts. Save for that period of play it was one way traffic and Sutton kept to the basics and simply ran in the tries. The key issue for Farnham was a lack of aggression and competition at the breakdown with too many forwards waiting in the back line for the ball that never came. It was a long afternoon and one that needs to serve as a real lesson for the squad in what is required to compete. You cannot play rugby without the ball and you have to show the commitment to win possession and do the " hard yards" before anything that follows. On this occasion we were second best in that department and as a result suffered our first loss of the season. If the lesson is not absorbed it will only get tougher from here!
