Farnham meet the Cornish

This Saturday saw a Farnham side off the bottom of the league , thanks to a last minute win over Tadley last week. Cornish on the other hand were riding high at the top of the league only three points below leaders Tottonians.
Despite an unfavourable weather forecast the day was warm and sunny with a moderate wind blowing down the pitch. A familiar line-up started the game, with Reece De-Gruchey making his first competitive start on the flank, and two other academy players on the bench in Tom O’Connor and James Kenna. A great sign of growing depth and the success of the Junior and Academy sides. The game was preceded by a fine lunch hosted by Geoff Robbins,
The game kicked off at 2.30 and Farnham showed good early pressure, and had chances especially for Chas Penn who was given room to open up, but was forced into touch short of the line. Number 8 Bond had a good break with De Gruchey gaining 25 metres. Good clearance kicks from both Salmon and Ollie Brown kept Farnham out of direct danger. Another great bit of running from Hurley linking with Comley and Masson almost say the first points on the board. After a touch kick from Chris Penn, Farnham were awarded a penalty and the ever reliable Salmon kicked the first three points. The Farnham backs again looked dangerous with runs from Comley and a 30m run from Chas Penn who was just caught short.
The Farnham scrum seemed under a lot of pressure but held on manfully, Naisbitt was subbed for Coutts on the half hour. Shortly after Meagher had a knock and a debut was given to James Kenna, and with five minutes to go Franklin who had been having another strong game with Simmons in the boiler room was yellow carded for an infringement on the ground. The first half ended to loud applause with the only points going to Farnham. A half with very little difference between the teams, in fact Farnham having a slight upper hand.
The second half could not have been so different, with Cornish applying pressure from the start. After a kick to touch Cornish who generally had dominated line out ball, found themselves in the corner. A catch and drive and rolling mauls were the pattern. The first try came out wide in the corner after five minutes, and was followed shortly after with the rolling maul. Hurley was subbed by young Tom O’Connor who like Kenna was getting his first bit of first team action.
Farnham errors and also desperation to try new things, was the undoing of the team in the second half. London Cornish put on 41 points without answer.
The positives were all demonstrated earlier on in the game, and the fact that Farnham blooded 3 new young players in the league is a great testament to the club.
Presidents Podium.
Andy Coutts 3
Reece De-Gruchey 2
Mike Salmon 1
