Farnhma 1st XV dominate local Derby against Camberley

Last Saturday saw newly promoted Farnham in its first home game against local rivals Camberley. The teams had not met for a number of years due to divisional differences, but with Camberley relegated last year and Farnham topping Surrey, another local derby match has been resurrected. Camberley having played Farnham’s rivals for the last two seasons, Old Cranleighans in the first game of the league season had come off second best losing 21-12. Whilst Farnham had a winning start against Old Mid Whitgiftians with a 30 point win.
The match was preceded by a lunch hosted by Chairman Geoff Robbins, with a hundred people sitting down to eat and being entertained by Geoff Bond and the famous joke. Camberley were represented by their chairman and members of the famous Gin and Tonics team from a past era.
The Farnham team had a familiar look to it from last week with Jennings and Rushton joining Trodden in the front row, and new comers Jason Crabbe packing down with Simmons and returning Martin Dedman adding some fire power in the back row. Ollie Brown took on scrum half again with Ben Rubio outside half and Dave Hurley replaced Andy Freshwater on the wing.
The game was kicked off by Camberley and started at a good pace, with Farnham showing up strongly in the tackling. Farnham looked hungry for an early score and were rewarded when they won a scrum and Rubio ran across doing a double dummy move through the centres and linking to Comley from the opposite wing, who fed Hills and then left Hurley with a short scamper to score the first home try of the season. A Farnham penalty then gave Rubio the kick to the corner, and at the 5m line Dedman leaped clear to catch and the short drive saw Daly across the line for the second. This was converted by Rubio for a 12-0 lead. The scoring continued after the re-start with another mazy run from Gabe Hills, some amazing Corlett tackles and another Daly mid field break feeding Ollie Brown and finally Jason Crabbe on a wide pass to score his first for Farnham since moving from Portsmouth, Rubio again converted. With twenty gone skipper Comley had a good break up the right fed by Martin Dedman. A clearance kick in mid field by Camberley led to the fourth try as it was caught by full back Hills, who then proceeded to show his athletic ability by running 60M through most of the Camberley team to score and collect the bonus point, and with Rubio’s conversion take a 26-0 lead, that took them into the end of the half. Very much job done, allowing the subs to start coming on in the second half.
The second half was started by Farnham, with Graham Black taking over on the loose head side, but the points went to Camberley after a penalty against Daly gave a kick to the corner. The resulting 5m line out was won and after two surges went over the line to give them 5 points. A quick response from Farnham, Chas Penn replaced Hurley and was soon into the action with an early break being caught just short of the line. Meagher who had had a great first half on the open side was replaced by Dean Chiverton after 15 minutes.
The next score by Farnham resulted in what looked like a backwards cross kick, that Comley retreated to catch, but then beat a number of players to cross the line for Farnham’s fifth try, the conversion was narrowly missed by Rubio. The power of Corlett and Mike Salmon in the centres showed all game with some determined breaks and harder tackles. The next try instigated again by Denman putting Daly into space and then the ball fed inside to Ollie Brown to score his first try for the 1st XV. This put the game up to 38-5 and sealed a god win. Camberley still gutsy to the end scored 2 more tries from close line outs and push overs, ending the game 38-17.
A good crowd pleaser for the fans on the balcony, and a good win sealed in the first half for Farnham. Many of the crowd congratulated a very good performance from the referee who kept tight control while allowing the game to be played as it should. This puts Farnham top of London SW3 with a 100% record and bonus points in both games, ahead of KCS and Old Cranleighans both a point behind. Next week sees a trip to Old Wellingtonians who have had a poor start to the season loosing heavily to Cranleighans and KCS, a tough start for them. Kick off is early at 12.30 at Wellington Collage.
