After two good wins, Farnham welcomed Cranleigh to the new ground last Saturday.

After heavy rain, both teams would have expected a mud bath in the old days, but the Farnham pitch, thanks to the work of Steve Tomlinson and the ground contractors, was in pristine condition. A crowd of around 200 came to watch the match, 70 of whom enjoyed a pre-match lunch in the clubhouse.
The Farnham team had slight changes in key positions but spirits were high. The experienced Lewes stood in for injured Penn, and Trodden moved to the back row replacing injured Bond. With Weeks out Chas Penn cemented his spot at outside centre.
Straight from the kick off from Farnham the team looked in robust mood, Cranleigh knocked the start kick on. From the scrum Rubio span the ball wide and then from the resulting ruck Daly powerfully drove on to within 5 metres, Black then took over and crashed over the line. Rubio converted and Farnham had a 7-0 lead within 3 minutes of the start. The play ebbed and flowed around the pitch for the next 20 minutes until Cranleigh gave away a penalty. Rubio found a good touch and from the resulting line out Trodden charged up the middle, feeding Yeoman who yomped the last 2 metres to score a great forwards try, much in the manner of the beloved Mortimore from years past. Further charges from Daly and the forwards eventually gave Corlett a chance but Cranleigh held on and went into half time trailing 12-0.
The second half started at a cracking pace, with an initial run from Comley supported by Trodden, from the play the ball went to Daly who fed Corlett for a great try that Rubio converted. Anyone late back from the bar missed a great power play try. Cranleigh’s only response was a penalty when Farnham were blown up for holding on the ground. This put Farnham in a good lead 19-3. Farnham’s last points came from a “ Hand of God “ moment from prop Black who had burst through on a loose ball and knocked the ball on, but playing to the whistle Meagher ran into the corner. Asked afterwards the referee who had a sterling game thought the ball had been knocked back by a defenders hand.
The game continued with more strong runs from fullback Hurley, who took every opportunity to show his pace. Lennox, a new member from Scotland, then replaced Harrison in the second row and showed his great jumping ability from an early stage. Further great charges from Yeoman seemed to follow from every piece of tight play, with Chiverton cleaning up every ball on the floor. Trodden was then replaced by Phillips in the back row.
An injury to Penn brought in the multi talented Burton, who quickly demonstrated why everyone admires his step. This was shown as Corlett created a break and fed wide, the step was given and the play rapidly went up the pitch before a fumble from Comley on the 22, brought the play back.
The final whistle saw Farnham triumph 24-3 against a strong Cranleigh team. The result has put Farnham into first place in the league after three games with a two point lead due to bonus points. Fortress Farnham is gathering pace.
The Presidents podium points went first to Daly, who showed great hands and feet, and strong running, secondly the ever reliable Corlett who had another excellent game and third went to Yeomans, a mighty effort from the front row man.
In two weeks the team are back into league action against Old Wimbledonian’s, back up the A3 for a crunch game. Old Wimbledonians who have had a shaky start with only one win and two losses used to be a nemesis for Farnham in the old days.
