Farnaham 67 Worth Old Boys 10

Under leaden skies with a chilling wind blowing up the pitch, the scene was set for the penultimate game of the season against Worth Old Boys ( Wobs). A slightly adapted Farnham team ran onto the pitch, with utility tight head prop James Trodden showing his versatility by starting on the left wing, with usual starters Gabe Hills and Dave Hurley being unavailable. The game was there to win but score difference seems a likely end to the season, as Wobs kicked off and Farnham were only 3 ahead of Old Cranleighans .
WOBS started strongly in the first six minutes, slightly hampered by the fact that quite a few of their team did not know each other very well , as they fielded a few new players home from University and some other mates of mates. Farnham’s first visit into the oppositions half resulted in a penalty in front of the post, quickly taken and passed to Pete Daly who crashed over to open the scoring, which Chris Penn dispatched with ease. Five minutes later Farnham again ventured into the WOBS half , this time James Trodden making a strong run to feed Pete Daly who then fed skipper Toby Comley, filling in at full back to cross the line wide out. The following conversion was narrowly missed by 20m.
Two minutes later Farnham were on the attack again with Pete Daly showing off his soccer skills with a hoof down the pitch and chase, the WOBS full back panicked after regaining the ball, and somehow Fran Meagher had the ball and touched down in the corner, the conversion was missed, but Farnham were now 17 point up with only 16 minutes played. From the ensuing kickoff Wobs put a spell of pressure with their left winger showing serious pace to be finally put into touch five metres out. The Farnham pack held the line but gave away a penalty for some offense in the middle of the maul, a quick tap and they were over for their first try in the corner, the resulting penalty was narrowly missed. Farnham then carried on the attack rolling down the pitch. Some great mauling work from Steve Simmons resulted the ball was worked out with Chris Penn breaking down the wing, eventually passing inside for Pete Daly to score again. The game was approaching half time and further Farnham pressure Toby Comley broke down the wing feeding James Corlett for a comfortable run in. Just before the whistle, Farnham had Fran Meagher yellow carded for use of hand and entering from the side, a little hard as he had not hit anyone all game. Half time saw Farnham leading 27-5.
Farnham kicked off the second half facing a rested WOBS who again showed good early pressure, resulting in a try from a driven over ruck. Farnham replied 5 minutes later with a break from Chris Penn inside his 22, feeding brother Chas who was forced to run in a 60M try up hill. Chris had a break from kicking and it worked as we converted for another 2 points.. Farnham’s tails were now up as the game seemed to open up further, and a quick tap penalty from Chris Penn fed skipper Toby Comley who ran in a 50M try, sliding in under the post just before the dead ball line and in doing so scythed over Farnham’s Chairmen Geoff Robins who was watching from behind the post.
Farnham’s pack were now showing some dominance and were awarded again from a 5m scrum with Comley scoring again which was converted easily. Farnham’s back were now cutting loose and another great break from Chris Penn fed Fran Meagher who passed onto Comley and back inside to Chas Penn to score another wonderfully crafted try again converted to make the score 53-10. Not to be outdone double try scorer from last week Tom Foster ran in a ball up the left to score again. The game was capped off by James Trodden running in Farnham’s last try which was converted to end the game 67-10.
This leave Farnham top of the table with a difference of 20 points over Old Cranleighans who had also won but by a smaller amount. This leaves the last game of the season against the Law society to play. Farnham’s travelling supporters enjoyed a free flowing game, with plenty of the sparkle they love to see and drove home in a buoyant mood to be met by the Vets team who had just beaten Harlequins Amateurs in their last game at Wrecclesham , a very emotional moment especially for ex club skipper Terry Whitear who at 55 has played his whole life at the old ground, and had just played in the winning team for the Vets.
