Re Arranged fixture allows Farnham to Celebrate St Patricks day in style

Farnham First XV Match Report 17th March 2012
The irresistible force of Farnham rugby visited a cold and blustery Bec Old Boys for the penultimate game of the season. Farnham in a comfortable second place faced an opposition only a couple of places below them in the league.
The day did not start well for Farnham who at one stage before the start of the game could not field 15 players due to an accident on the M3, but coach Barry Warner confidently used the whole bench to start and to amazing success.. The Old Becs pitch, which has a slope like Farnham, sits under the clouds at Battersea with views of the Heathrow flight path and a natty little cemetery.
Skipper Toby Comley started out as Scrum Half, in the absence of Alex Carlson, who was admiring the Flora on the M3, and within a couple of minutes span the ball wide from a line out and centre James Corlett scored an easy try. At this stage I will not talk conversions, but will summarize at the end. Restarting the game Old Becs pushed into the Farnham 22 only to pass the Ball to Chas Penn who against his better judgement was forced to sprint 70 meters up the hill to score under the post. The excitement was building in the crowd , that Farnham could be on the right end of a St Patrick's Day Massacre. Two minutes later James Peacock took a soaring lineout catch and the ball was spun wide for Fran Meagher to score in the corner, to end a great 15 minute start to the game.
Old Becs were awarded a penalty that they duly kicked which then allowed Farnham to bring on newly arrived players with Mark Crowther taking over the scrum half duties. Within 2 minutes Farnham won a great counter ruck from the lineout and Fran Meagher broke through feeding Mark Crowther inside to score under the post. Again a couple of minutes later Skipper Comley was set up for a try under the post as Old Becs started to fall apart, with no answer to the thunder of the Farnham pack or the lightning speed of the three quarters. Then from nowhere they managed to score with a great run from their centre crashing through over the line, It was not much but showed some spark.
After 35 minutes Farnham brought on a scrum half and service improved in both speed and accuracy, which was reflected two minutes later when the ball was span wide for Full back Gabe Hills to score under the post. The half was concluded with another score, but with a difference. Tight head prop James Trodden stormed through the opposition and faced a 25 metre run in to again score under the post. The half ended at 49-10 and the Farnham team settled into their fruit cocktails from the horse bucket.
Becs started the second half in style with a break from their 22 to score under the post and they had 17 points up. The game was a little static until skipper Comley broke wide feeding to no.8 Peacock inside for a splendidly worked try. Becs rallied behind the post and ran eagerly to the half way line for the re-start, unfortunately the kick went to full back Hills who ran it back, chipping their defence and showing his footie skills by twice kicking it on to score an individual try of great skill. Becs never seemed to learn that kicking deep to Farnham was a recipe for disaster and a few minutes later a long kick was caught by Dave Hurley who span the ball across pitch through two hands and it ended rather predictably with James Corlett running in under the post again.
Farnham attacked from the re-start again and in two minutes were again on the Becs line, this time using the forwards in the middle of the park. Prop Trodden crashed through surprisingly under the post again. Becs again ran back up to half way for the restart, and then ran back down the hill to their line, the crowd clapped loudly as Chris Penn had already run in a 50 metre try while they all watched. Farnham's points tally was finished off when Dave Hurley looped out side Comley and was fed a clever ball to again run in behind the post. Suddenly Farnham spotted the big 100 points coming near, but instead of scoring again they allowed Becs to score an excellent try which they converted ending the game with a score of Farnham 91 points to Becs 24
To wide applause Toby Comley led of his team with perhaps the Club's biggest ever league win. The last home game of the season next week against Old Cranleighans is now a table topper and a absolute must for the town to come out and see.
My last paragraph has to be for a player not mentioned a lot in the above text, Chris Penn who kicked an incredible 13 conversions in the game, and controlled the play in a masterful way. Fran Meagher was given Man of the Match for a huge game of destructive rugby.
Never in 25 years of watching the game at Farnham have I had such a bad head on a Sunday morning.
Well done Chaps!!
