Visitors Bognor are cast aside by a rampant Farnham

A gorgeous sunny afternoon with a teasing breeze greeted both teams and the match kicked off at pace with both sides sparring for position. Farnham dominated the initial contacts making dents and setting the tone. With Dan Williams, Toby Comley and Pete Daly unavailable, the revamped back row of Jonny Davidson, Jason Crabb and Buster Bond were determined to take the game by the scruff. Bristling with intent Davidson on the charge lead two breakouts with Corlett and Olugbade in the centre picking up on their form of last week.
Initially, Farnham were all a bit rushed and untidy. However the flow would come as this early snatchiness was confined to the first fifteen minutes.
Now the centres were on the prowl. Toby Salmon to Corlett and on to Olugbade, a sumptuous loop and flyhalf Toby Salmon over for the openers. Into an increasingly swirling breeze for brother Mike, the kick slid past the post. 5-0.
Nerves are settled and from the kick Luke Batten makes the yards. He makes forty, fifty metres with support on either side but is too late to take advantage and the opportunity is snuffed out. From the desperate clearance Bognor have the scrum. The Farnham front five disrupt and Bognor deliver untidy ball to their half backs. Flanker Davidson charges down the clearance kick attempt and scrum half Oli Brown falls on the loose ball to score the try. 10-0.
The current mantra in sport is marginal gains in everything. However, Farnham are producing some stunning, flowing support play until the last act then untidiness or poor decision making spoil the plot. Only Humphries of Rowledge has butchered more tries.
The sizeable crowd are growing restless. Bognor make a rare foray into the Home 22 when at last Farnham complete a fully coordinated break out. Mike Salmon bursts out of the 22 and on to winger Jermyn. Driven on by Ian Williams and Andy Naisbitt with Bond pulling the strings at the back of the drive. Winger Weeks held up but Olugbade on hand to apply the finishing touch. The crowd pleased - superb try.
Time for the coup de grace! Farnham launch a sweeping attack from the restart that completely dismisses the Bognor rear-guard culminating with Bond opening his account for the season. Scored close in, skipper Mike Salmon makes no mistake and its 22-0 with a try bonus point secure by half time.
Would the second half be a non-event or a feast of attacking rugby?
Early answer. A long kick off to Farnham is fielded by skipper Mike Salmon who launches the attack up the left hand touchline. Onto Jennings who sets up a dynamic driving maul and whoosh - out of nowhere - replacement prop John Trodden sprints thirty five metres to open the second period of entertainment. Bognor, the home supporters and possibly “Trodds” all take by complete surprise! Salmon secures the extra 2 and with the score 29 to nil, the game is out of sight.
Bognor will not capitulate but they cannot escape their 22. Penalties are starting to mount and the referee has no option but award a yellow card with the Farnham penalty. A chip to the corner line out catch and drive over the line and a smiling Jonny Davison emerges from the bottom of the pile.
The pace quickens and its too much for Bognor. The Salmon brothers break dangerously into the 22. Toby to Michael, a telescopic stretch and another try and the conversion 41-0.
The forwards are now really up to game speed. Jason Crabb, back after a two season absence, is making his mark and Buster Bond is back to his annoying best. He’s busy at the breakdown, organising the scrum and maul and advising referee. The revelation though is Man of the Match Jonny Davidson. He’s on the pace all match, hard yards and ferocious tackling deservedly breaking away to score the next try under the posts. Easy for Salmon. 48-0.
With the referee checking his watch Farnham receive the final kick off. Fielded by Toby Salmon who sets off at pace from inside his own 22. To the delight of the crowd, side step follows side step, tackles evaded and the try of the match is scored.
Promoted from the county leagues last season Bognor have a mountain to climb after their third heavy defeat. Farnham backs coach, dual international, Jamie Salmon highlighted their plight noting that they had not managed one attempt at goal and that Farnham had kept a clean sheet for the first time in two seasons. High praise for the home XV yet damning for the visitors. However, that this comprehensive victory was not even greater is testament to a Bognor XV who never threw in the towel. A big improvement from Farnham but still more to come as the season unfolds.
