Best performance for some time

The Farnham faithful viewed this as the best performance for some time as Farnham mauled a plucky Trojans side at Eastleigh on Saturday. With the Six Nations drawing to a close kick offs were adjusted to fit in with the championship party and Farnham were intent on setting the tone for the England game in the evening.

Early pressure by Farnham and a misleading win for Trojans at the first scrum - the tide was about to turn and turn quickly. An early long range sighter for Mike Salmon drifted past the post but minutes later his trusty right boot drew first blood.
The unexpected hard pitch and bone dry conditions with a cold breeze made running rugby both essential and the sensible option and Farnham were on fire.

Hooker Jonny Davidson, watched by his Mum Jill (a club stalwart and a welcome addition to the "faithful"), sets the tone with a thunderous tackle on the Trojans captain and driven on by the Bordon massive of James Trodden and Fran Meagher Farnham began to construct attack after attack. Dan Williams and Ben Adams in the second row making the hard yards straight through the heart of the defence and quick ball to Comley, de Gruchy and Meagher in the back row - the introduction of the effervescent Toby Finneron at scrum half fizzed the backs into action and with Toby Salmon at his feisty direct best the tries began to come.

A Finneron chip and chase created the opportunity and quick ball to winger Luke Jermyn for the first of his trio of tries. Straight from the kick off with Trojans in complete disarray a real team try with virtually every member of the visitors taking part, final break through by top of his form centre James Corlett to put a flying Jermyn in for his second.
Extras from Mike Salmon and Farnham are 0-15 ahead.

With only a quarter of the game gone Farnham ramp up the pressure and eventual man of the match Toby Comley romps over for the first of his hat-trick of tries. Comley has enjoyed a superb season at flanker, full back, centre - a true team player - always available and always effective.

The scoreboard at 0-22 sparks Trojans into action and they enjoy their most effective period of the half with a sustained series of battering attacks on the Farnham try line. The visitors hold sway swatting back successive attempts and a break-out try again by the ubiquitous Comley takes the sting out of the home efforts. Mike Salmon with an easy conversion 0-29.

Trojans opt for a long kick to restart which plays into the hands of the marauding Farnham backs, Toby Salmon to Elliott Rich with a delightful half break opens up the Trojans defence on to winger Charlie Badgery on the charge and recycled for the originator Toby Salmon to score wide out - another 80 metre running try. 0 - 34.

Breathless the Farnham spectators enjoy the half-time break.

Trojans with the breeze at their backs need a good start to have any chance - not their day. Adams up for the restart down to second row partner Dan Williams, who grows with every appearance, and on to Andy Naisbitt, enjoying his return after injury, confidence is high. The Farnham forwards muscle into the home 22 a break and Comley completes his hat-trick in a quarter of the match. Easy for Mike Salmon 0-41.

Trojans ring the changes an introduce some old heads to inspire their young side. Pride is at stake and they enjoy their best period of the match. Farnham sit back and Trojans run in two tries in quick succession. 10-41.

The Farnham response is brutal in its intensity. Shaken into action by the Trojans fight back there is a collective intake of breath and led appropriately by skipper Mike Salmon Farnham roar back, a delightful change of pace and cut back sees Salmon offload to the supporting speedster Elliott Rich - try and a nonchalantly dropped goal for the extras by Mike Salmon.

Kick off and another Farnham attack - penalty quickly taken by Finneron on to James Franklin, back in the 1st XV off the bench, try under the posts - Salmon for two more. 10-55 This is turning into a rout as the champagne rugby continues. Trojans struggle to stay in the game their fitness levels questioned at every turn.

With the clock running down Farnham launch another multi pronged attack. Freshwater, on for Corlett, skipping out of tackles, arrows through the scattered defence to free up Badgery, on to the predatory Jermyn to complete his striker's hat-trick wide out. The Salmon conversion rebounds of the post with 60 on the scoreboard.

A superb performance by all eighteen players used is capped by a final lung bursting team try started and ended by Toby Salmon.
Skipper Mike Salmon drawing the game to a close with the conversion.

A plucky Trojans XV beaten but not disgraced.

Podium Points:
Toby Comley - 3 - three tries and a constant presence - ubiquitous.
Fran Meagher - 2 - huge performance - a true team player
Luke Jermyn - 1 - three tries classy finishing.
