With five back row forwards in the pack, Farnham swamped a spirited New Milton XV at Monkton Lane.

The visitors have had a torrid season with no wins in 12 games but driven on by their experienced veteran coaches Brendan Treacey and Chris Conacher (who also played at No 8) the Hampshire boys put up a fight until the last minute of this lively encounter.

Swirling winds greeted both teams and Farnham after losing the toss battled into the gale for the first half. Blowing hard down the pitch from the Badshot Lea end the conditions were bound to play their part. A good clearance pushed Farnham forward and the subsequent up and under kick allowed fly half Toby Salmon to set the tone with a thunderous first up tackle on his opposite number Conacher. The crowd shuddered and from the subsequent breakdown scrum half Oli Brown sniped wide to free up James Corlett - on to the ever present Toby Comley who raced in under the posts - extras for skipper Mike Salmon. 7-0.

The game was frenetic with the referee necessarily on the top of his game. New Milton persisting on quick ball with a switch back into the forwards - the veracious Farnham back row of Bond, Comley and Davidson were relishing the tackle and turnover - with normal back rowers Dan Williams and eventual man of the match Will Markham playing in the second row Farnham had the firepower at the breakdown all afternoon.

The visitors break out and a sustained attack is finally thwarted by the ubiquitous Bond who wins the ball at the turnover to free up the backs. Brown to Salmon Toby and on to elder brother Mike - a half break through the gap and on to flying winger Elliot Rich - 12-0 and again the conversion from Salmon Snr.

New Milton are enjoying the bulk of the possession - pressure builds but the cut back into the pack is becoming easy to police. Another turnover from Bond and the rampaging Dan Williams is on the charge. On to the supporting Jemi Akin-Olugbade and a try for Oli Brown in support. The wind has been cancelled out and 19-0 to Farnham at the break. Encouraging signs - the pack are dominating the scrums and the back row are beasting the breakdown. The space created is opening up yawning gaps in the New Milton rearguard.

Farnham now have the wind at their backs and skipper Mike Salmon starts to pull the strings putting the pack into attacking positions with yard eating grubber and aerial kicks. New Milton battle in defence but some devastingt tackles by Markham and Williams start to break down the resistance. A skirmish results in a Farnham penalty - drilled to the corner - the visitors hold and clear their lines straight to the predatory Jemi who delivers a superb lobbed pass to Mike Salmon - space and brother Toby in for the bonus point try - 26-0.

The visitors will not lay down and continue to fight their corner, attacks are beaten back but after a Lineout the pack drives for the line. “Use!” is the command from the referee and scrum half Oli Brown starts the ball rolling - Salmon to Akin, Corlett and Rich and a tantalising pass to Luke Jermyn for his first senior try. Superb skills and surely the clincher.

The wind speed increases and another Milton attack is beaten back - the subsequent breakout by substitute centre Ed Weeks puts centre James Corlett over for a try. Nonchalant drop goal extras from skipper Mike Salmon take the score to 38-0 with the light fading and the wind increasing - the bonus point secure.

The New Milton spirit will not be doused who power back with a well-deserved try in the last minute for skipper Treacey to put over under the posts. 38-7.

Good signs from Farnham with standout performances all over the pitch. The back row of Davidson, Bond and Comley backed by Markham and Williams ruled open play. The front row of Naisbitt, Jennings and Joris negated their bigger counterparts in the scrum freeing up acres of space for the Backs who enjoyed those acres.

The next game is scheduled to be Eastleigh away on the 16th Jan, however their pitch is liable to flooding so keep comms open as the game may be switched to Monkton Lane.
