Farnham’s first cup match on the year was played at Monkton Lane last Saturday, to the support of a full clubhouse

For the first time this year Farnham sported four senior side all at home, it was a fantastic spectacle from the balcony to see the black and white hoops covering the vast expanse of the facility, and showed the extent of the clubs strength in depth.
An apology for an error in last week’s report, this was queried by the International RUFC committee and many members from affiliated nations. The sentence in question stated that “ Burton was multi-talented”, this should have read – Burton was multi- faceted. This meaning there were many aspects to his game. Apologies for the idea that he had a number of talents.
The game saw the return from injury of back row Bond and saw regular second team combination of Brown and James in the half back positions. A welcome return for Hills was also given after his American adventure. The pitch was good and firm with hints of the sun coming around the clouds. A pre match rainbow was a sign that Farnham would treasure the game.
The game started off at a fine pace, with some accurate box kicking from young Brown. A serious injury after 5 mins saw a break in play for 5 minutes as a Southampton played was stretchered off and sent to hospital. Farnham now started to roll ahead with strong runs from Hurley narrowly being deprived by the touch line. The ball was won again and span wide to the other touch, when Sotton gave away a penalty. A quick tap to Daly who broke the line before feeding onwards eventually arriving for skipper Comley to score in the corner. After this the half had few moments of excitement, a brief run from Hills and good tackling from Simmons and Bond saw the half end with Farnham only 5 points ahead.
Sotton kicked of the second half showing a bit more ungency, early pressure saw Farnham attacking the line, a free kick saw Daly on the charge before feeding Corlett who crashed over for Farnham’s second try. James narrowly missed the conversion. From the re start the ball was collected by Daly who ran through the Sotton defence before kicking through for Hurley who was taken into touch. From a subsequent line out Bond tidied the ball on the ground and it was fed to Daly who crashed over. James took an easy conversion giving Farnham a lead of 17-0. A further forward move saw Black push up the middle and the ball was fed to Corlett for a n easy run in, the score was converted by James for 24-0.
Farnham then brought on their subs, Philips for Daly and Foster for Bond, continued pressure saw Corlett feed Comley on the line for another try from the Skipper. With 20 mins to go James was rotated and Chas Penn stepped into fly half. Comley had another run in 5 minutes later to bring the score up to 36-0. The game was rounded out with a final try for Comley after Hills made a strong run and was held up on the line, the skipper picked and placed the ball over for his third of the game and saw Farnham victorious with a winning score of 41-0 over Southampton.
