On a baking hot Autumn afternoon, Farnham travelled the unfamiliar route south down the A3 for their first pre-season encounter against a recently relegated Petersfield

Missing a number of last season’s three quarters Captain Comley showed off the new depth of Farnham Rugby with debutant Ollie Brown making his first team and senior debut for the club at scrum half. Veteran Simon Lewis took his place at stand off with returning Mike Salmon and Ed Weeks covering the rest of the positions. A notable return to Farnham colours saw Buster Bond, son of the legendry Geoff return to the back row after a number of years away in the Army.

A confident Petersfield started the game at breath taking speed and scored the first try in the corner after only a matter of minutes. Farnham took a breath and started their fightback, impressive McCaw style rucking and mauling from bond saw the ball won and elusive running from Salmon saw the game turn after a strong central run the ball was spun wide for Comley to run in his first of a well deserved hatrick.
At the end of the first quarter a water break was called allowing some changes to be made. A re-emergent Phillips came on in the back row and Daly moved into the engine room. The next 15 mins saw Phillips transform the speed of the game with some mesmerising runs and fabulous link up play with the three quarters, cumulating in Corlett breaking the defence and in first receiving position Phillips went over to give Farnham the lead.
Further displays on the Farnahm talent saw Bond and Brown linking well, with the ball going wide again for another from Comley. Unfortunately Bond suffered a knee injury soon afterwards and that was the last seen of his form.
Further tries from Corlett, who had a strong game and Comley saw the game moving quickly away from a despairing Petersfield. New scrun half Brown carried on feeding his outside men and as confidence grew even tried a few breaks from the base. After one of these the ball went wide again from Brown to Corlett and Hurley finished of a flowing move in the corner. Petersfield then tried a quick drop out, but unfortunately the second row with aspirations of stardom mis kicked the ball that was picked up by Salmon who promptly scored. Petersfield did fight back with a couple of tries but the whistle went leaving the score 49-26.
Farnham next game is against the Irish Guards on Thursday at Wilkinson Way, with a 7pm kick off.
The signs look great for Farnham, with an abundance of talent waiting in the wings, and an enthusiasm for a fast running game, which should come into its own on the new ground.
