Farnham U16 Girls began their HOB campaign with a 26-12 defeat to Trojans at Wilkinson Way.
Tries from Molly W and Eva W and a conversion from Eva J threatened an upset against their well-drilled rivals but in the end it was not to be. However, neither the result nor the miserable weather could dampen spirits after such a gutsy display.
Injuries plagued Farnham’s preparations and they entered this clash with a bare XV but they rose to the challenge and were rewarded for some sparkling rugby, in difficult conditions, with the opening score from Molly W.
Farnham’s endeavour across the park continued to cause problems for Trojans, with Jess H’s notable efforts rewarded post-game, but crucially they were not able to extend their lead.
To their credit, the visitors battled back and took charge of the contest despite Farnham’s impressive rearguard action with Amelie M’s defensive heroics later acknowledged by Trojans.
Three tries from Trojans turned the game and showcased their strength in both the forwards and backs.
Undeterred, and despite further injuries, Farnham rallied with Eva W powering over from close range with the conversion from Eva J bringing Farnham back to within a score.
But Trojans finished strongly and scored once more to ensure a winning start to their Cup campaign.
