In the age group Chobham and Farnham have shared many an epic battle over the years and this did not disappoint. The Girls second match of the weekend saw us bring in some fresh legs. Chobham have been flying in recent weeks beating everybody in Surrey so we knew we would have to be at our best.
Very disappointed that Farnham RFC could not find us a pitch to play our first cup match @ home since 17th November..... but our friends @ Guildford RFC came to our rescue and hosted the girls fabulously! Beautiful conditions and fabulous pitches set the scene for another epic encounter.
From kick off Farnham pressed well, pressuring Chobham and not allowing them any easy way out of their 22. Really tough work from the Farnham forwards turned the ball over and battered the Chobham try line sadly without success. Slightly guilty of going alone Farnham did not get to the rucks quickly enough while Chobham threw girls in quickly turning the ball over and eventually clearing their lines.
Chobham finally mounted an attack and following a multi phased attack they battled over the line scoring the first try of the game out really wide. At the restart Farnham were guilty of letting Chobham receive and run it back putting us immediately back under pressure. A huge defensive set looked like we had repelled the Chobham attack. Unfortunately a penalty in the middle of the pitch gave Chobham the perfect platform to attack and they scored their second try out wide. Neither conversions were successful so Chobham took a 0-10 lead after the first 15 minutes.
Farnham reorganised and the team started to make serious gains, protecting the ball in the rucks better, providing quicker ball for the scrum half to work with. Finally after a humongous set of carries by the forwards we had earned the space, 4v2 out wide and following some slick handling between the backs Lara (wing) managed to get outside her counterpart and theatrically dived in to score Farnham first. This was to be the final score of the half ending 5-10 in favour of Chobham.
Second half continued much as the first, Chobham scored first but then Farnham got a couple back leaving the last 10 minutes to be player 15-15. Farnham camped in Chobham's half made us confident we had what we needed. But as ever Chobham had one more attack in them which Full back Bea N-S managed to stop on our 22. The team retreated well and the forwards went to town in holding the rampaging Chobham back. As the clock ran down Farnham won the battle at the breakdown and believing time was up we kicked it out only to be left to defend a lineout with seconds left on the clock. The lineout never went to plan but Chobham regained possession and with Farnham guilty of creeping offside it gave Chobham one final drive for the line which they took and scored to the disappointment of all the Farnham girls.
POM voted by Chobham: Lola Watson (Wing) a day for Lola's defensive prowess cannot remember a tackle missed!
Coaches player Emma Parry (Flanker) for countless turnovers at the breakdown and strong carries into the heart of Chobham
