Cobham hosted a Friday night under lights match after the fixture was postponed in January due to torrential rain. Not much grass on the pitch but perfect underfoot.
Farnham unfortunately forgot the match started and within the blink of an eye Cobham raced to a 14-0 lead without a tackle being made. There was concern on the sidelines that perhaps Friday night up the A3 with a tired team might not have been the right conditions for us. But these girls have forgotten how to lose. Eventually after 10 minutes the fluency and togetherness started to creep back and the building of phases in attack along with tackling and rucking in defense, not giving anything away without a fight began. A much more familiar feel to the game returned but the uphill battle that we gave ourself meant every player had to dig deep.
Farnham managed to get onto the score board via Amelie Moran (Full Back) who broke through showing the rest of the team how we had to work to get back into the game. What continued was a crazy 15 minutes of quite sublime rugby, lots of phases, some slick handling and support in every tackle, ruck or line break saw Farnham take the lead with tries from Lola x2 (Wing), Evie (hooker) and Phoebe (inside centre). With Eva Jenkins (Fly Half) converting two, Farnham took a quite incredible 19-29 lead into the half time after what can only be described as the worst start to a game we could have possibly imagined.
The second half was a much more predictable affair. Lusty blows from both sides, strong defensive sets with a couple of excellent line breaks particularly Ettie Hardcastle breaking through on our own 22 and almost in disbelief she ran the length of the pitch dismissing all attempts to tackle her. At 19-36 to Farnham it was time to give a couple of of our tired bodies a well earnt rest! Maybe 10 mins too early as Cobham mounted attack after attack. Cobham definitely got the ref on side and a period of 7 continuous penalties within a 5 minute period all within our 22 lead to an inevitable team yellow card for Lara Staton. First card of the season and the following 6 minutes with a player down felt like an eternity. The sin bin did allow Cobham to grow in confidence and got the scoreboard moving again.
31-36 with 5 minutes to go but back to 15 and the girls managed the game well playing mostly in or around the Cobham 22. Evie Martin made a phenomenal line break but was brought down millimetres from the try line for what would have been the decisive score! There was one last attacking set to withstand and although Cobham did break our defensive wall the ever dependable Amelie Moran (Full Back) made another match winning tackle and the girls managed to play out the clock and take a well earnt win.
POM voted by Cobham Players: Amelie Moran outstanding in defence and joined the attack cleverly always breaking the gain line.
Coaches mentions: to all the players who played in unfamiliar positions including 2 debuts in the front row, Darcey Pearce for playing all over the pitch and Ettie Hardcastle playing her first game in the back row and was brilliant.
Truth be told we were far from our best but the girls just find a way to get over the line! A habit very difficult to coach but this group of girls have it!
