It is becoming a ritual for this age group to play Chobham in Surrey finals days. This year Chobham bolstered by Bracknell took the field on a sweltering day at Wimbledon Rugby Club.
For once we got the start we were after. Bracknell trying to clear their lines from the kick off only found Bea N-S who swerved and stepped around all the Chobham defenders to give us the first score after just 1 minute. Heidi Shayler slotted the conversion with a great strike through the middle. Following the restart Farnham again drove direct into Chobham and put all the pressure back on them. Following a prolonged period in the Chobham 22 it was looking like their defensive efforts were going to pay off. Up steps Neve Dawson 2m out picking and going from the ruck to score our second at the feet of Chobham's defenders. 12-0 up after 10 minutes and we had the start we were looking for.
Slightly disappointing to concede straight away from the restart with Chobham's first attack of the game! Now both sides had settled down we exchanged blows for a large part of the game with defensive efforts a testament to both sides. Both teams were held up over the try line showing just how much it meant to both sides. Half time 12-5 to Farnham.
Second half started much the same as the first half finished, trading blows, try saving tackles and generally a very even contest! 15 minutes into the second half and Chobham got that elusive try right on the side line and Chobham's kicker stepped up and converted right through the middle with ease! 12-12.
This was trundling towards another nailbiter with the girls giving their all and defenses nullifying attacks and line breaks. It was at that point the we fell foul to conditions and hard ground with one of our wingers getting crushed at the bottom of a ruck following a tackle after Chobham had created an overlap. Sadly this was to be the last we would see of our winger who was magnificently looked after by our first aiders and the paramedics. We wish Amy a speedy recovery.
With 13 minutes left to play a subsequent 30 minute delay in restarting and pitch swap did not help Farnham. We were guilty of backing off and for the next 5 minutes Chobham seized the advantage scoring 2 quick tries and converting one again from out on the touch line. 12-24 to Chobham 56 minutes to go and it seemed like a mountain to climb, but as has been a feature of the girls this year they play to the end and forced pressure back on the oppo. Brutal drives into the Chobham defense and the penalties started to wrack up. 10m out in front of the posts and Chloe Calder took a quick tap bursting through the Chobham defenders, just about having enough momentum to get her across the line, Heidi slotted the conversion and we had 4 minutes at 19-24 down to get something out of the game.
Although we were unable to retake the restart the subsequent scrum resulted in our penalty which started 5 minutes of sustained pressure. Again penalties were adding up, high tackles, offside, off feet and finally the ref got tired of repeated infringements and went to his cards, making Chobham's No8 watch the last couple of minutes from the sidelines. Fantastic ball retention and intensity Farnham made it to within a couple of metres of the Chobham try line under the posts when the referee adjudged us to be holding on and gave Chobham the penalty which they kicked straight out to take the win.
Another fabulous match to end the season, but as with our last 3 matches now we have gone down by less than a score. Thoroughly proud of all who took part and we will see you all on Wednesday for our End of Season presentations.
