Pumas chalk up 1st victory

After a chilly start we were yet again spoiled by the weather with a beautiful day for a bit of running rugby. First up for Farnham Pumas were Effingham and Leatherhead. Pumas started where they left off last week and ended the first half 2-2, demonstrating some very open rugby with good passing and support. The second half was very tight but two errors and turnovers against Pumas saw E&L run in two further tries, ending the game victors at 20-10. The kids took some time to think about what they could have done differently and spent a bit of time devising their own practice prior to the next match.

Second up was Rosslyn Park. First blood went to Pumas but Rosslyn hit back with three quality tries in the first half as Pumas found themselves offside at the tag a couple of times. The second half saw Pumas run in two 3 further tries, but this was matched by Rosslyn as the match ebbed and flowed for a nail bighting 5 minutes. Full time saw Rosslyn emerge as victors at 30-20. The kids again spent some constructive time discussing their performance between themselves and practiced moving as a cohesive unit for 20 minutes prior to the third match.

Next in the draw came Sutton and Epsom. Pumas hit the ground running and some beautiful moves and expansive running and passing saw them end the first half 2-1 up. The second half was action packed and it was a credit to both sides when the referee reflected that it was the best game of rugby he had seen all day! The ball was moved the full width of the pitch continuously with Pumas crossing the line for three further tries. S&E threw all they had at Pumas but for a whole 2 minutes they held them static with some brilliant defence that had S&E going backwards or sideways with no way through. Finally a turnover saw S&E run in a quality breakaway try but Pumas chalked up their first and very well deserved victory at 25-15. A further highlight came for the young squad when the referee again commented on the spirit that the game had been played in and how Pumas had been exemplar in their sportsmanship. After the match, when the squad were asked what had been outstanding about the match, we were all pleasantly surprised when the response came back “We passed the ball at least three times before each try.” Well done Pumas!

The final match saw Pumas take on Guildford. This was without doubt their best performance and a fantastic demonstration in attacking and defending. The support play was really clicking with Captain Katie leading the way. The match was played at a ferocious pace and Pumas breached the Guildford defence four times, but unfortunately each time the try scorer went to ground and the scores were disallowed. Although the Pumas were disappointed and annoyed as they were being physically blocked and barged, they held it together and it is a huge credit to them that Guildford only breached their defence once with a breakaway try, claiming the victory at 5-0 at full time. It was again fantastic to hear the referee applaud their performance, commenting on how well they kept the ball moving and the continuity they developed. It really was a brilliant game to watch.

Choosing man of the match was a real challenge as they had all shone, with six of the squad getting their names on the score sheet and Freddy Thorneycroft leading the way on that front. Overall though it was felt that James Goldsworth had earned the honour due to his support play, try scoring and tagging and was a well-deserved Player of the week.
