Festival Report by: Nye Johnson

Sadly Haselmere couldn’t make the festival, so our pool rounds were limited to two games.

First match against Rosslyn Park
Rosslyn Park 4 – Farnham 0

A tough team to draw for our first match, Farnham made a solid start but gave away two break away tries through bad passing and committing too many players to the breakdown, consequently depleting their defensive three quarter line. Some inspired halftime coaching saw a focused Farnham effort in the second half which restricted Rosslyn Park to just one try, a marginal touch-down in the corner. The score at the final whistle did not reflect the effort from the Farnham boys.

Of note, Ben Atkins tackling, William Shaw good breaks. Nye - good effort at scrum half and a great drive and layback from Hamish. Toby Fitter laying the ball back nicely for second phase possession following tackle.

Second match against Guildford
Guildford 2 – Farnham 3

Following the first match the Farnham coaches Dominic and Dave worked hard with the boys with a variety of drills which saw them take to the pitch with an extra spring in their step. Despite this however some further passing errors saw Farnham fall behind by two tries - a lesser team would have thrown in the towel at that stage. Farnham however dug deep and through a determined effort clawed their way back into the game. Real commitment from Cameron and a great try from Ben Walters (the Usain Bolt of under tens rugby) started the reverse in fortunes and then with the support of the whole team, further tries from William Shaw and Tom H-T completed a fantastic victory.

With Rosslyn Park having also beaten Guildford, Farnham were through to the Plate Final.

Plate Final against Cobham
Farnham 1 – Cobham 3

The boys were excited by the prospect of a final against Cobham, a side that they have come up against many times before, and Farnham were ready to make their mark. The parents, subs and coaches were all on hand with great support from the touchline as the game got underway. Disappointingly for Farnham, some indecision and a return of the tendency to commit too many players to the breakdown mauls and rucks saw Cobham take advantage of the gaps in our defensive line. Our restarts also lacked support for the first receiver which led to isolations and turn over ball. Despite these setbacks and having conceded three tries Farnham never gave up and overall produced a great team effort. This was rewarded in the final moments of the game with a great try from Jake Epps who showing great strength and determination and with his mouth-guard strategically located in his sock, wriggled his way over the line for a Farnham try which saw the team finish on a high.

Well done to the whole squad, a real team effort, some remarkable determination, they never gave up.
