Bs open league campaign with a flourish

A visit away to Old Rut’s at Mitcham was the location for the U13B’s first league match of the season. Farnham were quickly into their stride pressurising the Old Ruts defence straight from the kickoff. With energetic forward play and strong tackling throughout the Farnham team, Old Ruts found it difficult to get out of their own half, being often pinned within their own 22

With 5 minutes on the clock Ben Atkins burst through the line to score the opening try of the game which was ably converted

With their tails now up Farnham played a fast pressing game. Great work by the forwards in the scrummage and wonderful support play around the rucks ensured Farnham continued to dominate the opening period. The backs also were getting involved in the action playing a fast expansive passing game which was causing Old Ruts no end of problems

Following a scrummage on the Old Ruts 22 yard line, a blind side move was superbly finished off by Finbarr Wormwell crashing through the Old Ruts defence to double the Farnham lead. 12-0

At this point Old Ruts began to rally and started to press Farnham. The defence was however resolute with some heavy and committed tackles coming in from both forwards and backs, slowing down and even pushing back the concerted Old Ruts attacks

Finally just before half time Old Ruts finally broke the Farnham line, but a superb last man tackle by Ewan McLeod ensured Farnham went in at half time without conceding

The second half started much as the first had finished with Old Ruts on the attack pinning Farnham into their own 22 for the opening 5 minutes. However, the Farnham defence would not be broken. Finally the pressure was relieved when Ben Atkins burst out of defence to force his way deep into the Old Ruts half before being bundled into touch. This led to a Farnham attacking revival. With 10 minutes gone of the second period a superb break and well timed pass from Noah Eldridge led to a Ewan McLeod try in the corner

Farnham were playing great rugby throughout the team. The pack was exerting itself in the scrummage and starting to dominate the rucks. The backs were full of running in both attack and defence. The tackling was mighty

Spurred on once again Farnham pressed forward. After the forwards won a great ruck, Ewan McLeod picked up and drove for the line being stopped just short. However after a well timed off load Finbarr Wormwell was on hand to take the pass and break through the final line of defence to score next to the posts. Farnham 24 - Old Ruts 0

Farnham’s pack not to be left out again pressed the Old Ruts line. With 10 minutes remaining on the clock they drove over for William Mylchreest to score Farnham’s final try. The conversion narrowly missed unfortunately bouncing back off the cross bar

Old Ruts however were not done. They started to press forward in the dying stages of the game and again pressed the Farnham line. With 5 minutes to go Farnham’s Samuel Johnston playing for Old Ruts to make up their numbers, ran a superb line which split the tiring Farnham defence. Another try by a Farnham player, but this time for Old Ruts

With the final attack of the game Old Ruts again managed to get over the Farnham line scoring in the corner

Final Score, Old Ruts 12 Farnham 29

A fantastic opening league game from a very committed Farnham side. All of the squad should be very proud of their efforts to ensure this victory. Lets have more of the same in subsequent matches….
