A tough day for the U13 As at Effingham

This morning the U13As made the journey to Effingham Eagles to play a friendly match against their A team.

The Farnham As were not at full strength with a number of key players out of action with injury (Aston, Louis, Jake) or illness (Finlay) but 16 guys took to the pitch at Browns Lane for the warm up. Unfortunately Josh Smith took an accidental elbow to the nose before the game started so by the time the 11am kick off came, Farnham were already down to 15 with a tough day at the office in prospect and no subs on the bench for when legs began to tire.

The tail end of tropical storm Abigail was blasting into the faces of the Farnham boys from the start. They quickly found that kicking into the wind was not the best tactic. Effingham of course had the wind behind them and it wasn't long before some fierce work at the breakdown gave them the ball which was quickly passed out to their right wing who popped it down in the corner. A tough conversion proved beyond their kicker to leave the score at 5-0

The Farnham boys were galvanised into action realising they were going to have to fight for every scrap of possession. Unfortunately without the ability to kick the ball for territory, they played most of the rest of the first half inside their own 22. They defended solidly but eventually the black and white line let a three man green and yellow overlap take a second unconverted try to finish the first half 10-0 down.

In the second half, Farnham had the benefit of the same gusty wind which had been their downfall in the first half. Suddenly, kicking for territory became much easier and it was the turn of the Effingham boys to defend but the ebb and flow of the game and some heroic defending on both sides prevented any further scores and so the game finished 10-0 to Effingham.

The depleted Farnham side, bereft as it was of much of its firepower, did well in defence but their attack failed to make an impression on the Effingham try line. Sam Wright deserves a special mention for some excellent bursts, splitting the Effingham defence and Ben Atkins also made some superb tackles. A tough game but some cracks in the Effingham armour showed and we'll hope for a stronger side and some better weather for the League match with the same side on 7th Feb next year.
