34 - 12 Loss
The Alton pitches are notoriously boggy and today was a quagmire for both teams. The boys put in a great effort today despite the conditions and in a game of two halves; we lost the first and won the second.
Alton out-weighed our boys significantly today and in the first few scrums this was evident. Alton supported each other well and scored four ties in quick succession by off-loading well. Alton's aggression in attack was met with a great response from Farnham, who gave nothing away in the tackle. In particular, the 10, 12 and 13 partnership of George Fletcher, Tom Faulkner and Tyler Buckley were consistently fast up in defense, allowing Alton no time on the ball to spread it wide. A runaway try from Bosco Darling, who intercepted on his own 22, took us into halftime three tries adrift.
Our forwards took it to them in the second half. Joe Saggers (Man of the Match) switched from 2nd row to prop and immediately made his mark. In the first half, we lost scrums. In the second, we didn't lose any and the pack showed good maturity and technique to win the second half's game. The entire team tackled well. We have quite a few development and new players in the squad and they all showed bravery and determination in the tackle and in the second half showed that you can hold your own against a lot bigger opposition if you tackle well.
Towards the end of the game, both sides were getting very tired from running through the Alton ooze, but we held out and a sustained period of pressure resulted in a great driving try from Joe Saggers. We were very unfortunate to lose Tyler Buckley to an ankle injury at the end of the match.
Overall a spirited performance regardless of the score.
