Great win away from home against a big, strong Chobham team which was end-to-end and as thrilling as the scoreline suggests.

Chobham started well, with an early try. It’s a trademark of this U14 team that we like to have a little nap in the first few minutes. We woke up and for the next 20 minutes, our boys gave nothing away, with Rory Hodges scoring a Captain’s try, finishing off a period of possession where every ruck was cleared out, every tackle was made and clean ball was available for our out-of-position centres (who both normally play in the forwards).

Chobham rallied well and we went into half-time one try down, but the mood was good - we never actually felt like we were going to lose.

During the second half the boys’ tails were up. Harry Morgan, having an outstanding game at No.6 and Jake Holden, who came back into the pack at No. 7, were dominant in every ruck, again producing clean ball for Orsino Hampden-Woodfall to control the pace of play. It was a mature and confident team that took every opportunity and scored. We had two tries disallowed in the second half - both held up, one of which was the result of a pitch-length dash by the ever-powerful Jack Bonthuys who was caught over the line and judged to have been held. The boys kept their head and James Richardson, who went over for three tries in all, powered his way over when it mattered.

There were too many great performances to list here, but Chobham rightly voted for Tom Quick as man of the match. Tom was everywhere today and thoroughly deserved the award. Eliot Davies and James Allen both deserve a mention for fearless tackling. Their indomitable spirit and can-do attitude was infectious; the whole team rallied behind captain Rory and we were worthy winners.

In the technical areas we did very well and in particular our scrum was tight; we drove Cobham off the ball on at least 4 occasions and when we had the strike, we produced quality ball for George Morris to pick and go, or for the backs. It was a real pleasure to watch.
