We arrived at Petersfield to bright and sunny day with a team that was well balanced. We had a number of boys who didn’t play on the tour it was good to get them run out and represent the badge.
On arrival we were told that Petersfield were only able to field 13 players. We discussed with the boys and they wanted to stay as a team and not lend them players. So we Drop the two flankers and set about the game. We had a young ref who is not been in the game long and he had his work cut out for him to manage a group of 15 and 16-year-olds who are full of testosterone. Throughout the match his decision-making was to be tested but overall he had a reasonable game.
Our boys started well in the first half we dominated in the first set of rocks which is exactly what we set out to do. We were determined to do three things put dominating tackles in, win the ball at set piece and deny them space. Throughout the entire first half that’s exactly what we did resulting in Eddie scoring two and Benjy crossing for a while and try. George converted all three tries giving us a lead of 21 nil. The opposition won’t sit down and scored in the first half with the scores going in at half-time 21 - 7.
The second half however our boys seem to have a little sleep and they definitely did not come out with the same ferocity and same determination as the first half started. This resulted in the team losing ball being put on the back foot and allowing Petersfield to play their dominant game with some of their big forwards. The boys had another score against them but the conversion was missed making the score 21-12. We had a word with the team and the team at work with them selves about picking up their concentration levels and becoming the dominant team once more.
The last 10 minutes of the half that’s exactly what we got from them resulting in the final score 21-12 to Farnham on a hot and sweaty Sunday afternoon.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums hope you enjoyed the match look forward to seeing you all soon.
