The U16 Dev team played their hearts out today but couldn't contain a strong Warlingham side

Match report: David Adams
The U16s Development team travelled to Dorking Rugby Club to play the final of the Waterfall Cup Treasurer's Bowl against Warlingham.

The boys were up against a big team but we started well. The first 10 minutes was an even contest with our scrum holding its own. Cameron Bellenger and Ben Seymour were again immense and ably supported by Hari Tote and Jake Kimberley. Harry McGuigan playing at stand-off half made a couple of good tactical kicks to advance the team deep into the Warlingham 22 but each time we were unable to put points on the board. Then a good breakaway by Warlingham lead to the first score of the game.

Almost immediately we bounced back and after some good play by both backs and forwards Jake Kimberley made a good run from just inside their 22 and although tackled near the line managed to scrabble over for the score just by the uprights. Harry added the conversion to give us a 7-5 lead.

However Warlingham were starting to play a better and using their larger runners with good effect and soon scored another try with a good attacking run. We countered with some good attacking play from Gus Andersen who had two good runs and Seb D’Entrecasteux although Seb was injured in one move and didn’t take part in the rest of the game. Not much later they scored again but in the dying minutes of the game we had a good scoring opportunity. From another good scrum we passed the ball down the back line and Jack Gilbert was unlucky to be tackled into touch about 10 yards short. Unfortunately this was the last play of the half.

We started the second half brightly with Nye Johnson replacing Tom Adams at scrum half and Charlie Cochrane going to number 10. Charlie had his kicking boots on and we played a lot of the game in the right half of the pitch. However Warlingham continued to play to their strengths and despite strong tackling from Olie Kirkpatrick, Charlie Cochrane and Jack Gilbert their big men added a few more tries from powerful runs.

However our heads didn’t drop and with about 5 minutes to go Tom H-T and Will Mylchreest attacked down our left flank and a penalty 15 yards out lead to a line out close to Warlingham’s goal line. Winning the line out, we then made several attempts to score with Kian Ashcroft, Max Foskett, Olie Kirkpatrick and Kyle Drablow all going close. Another penalty was awarded just 10 yards out and in a well marshalled move lead by Hamish Watson, Kyle Drablow forced his way through a brace of defenders to score. From a long way out Harry McGuigan slotted the conversion to make the final score 14-35.

Podium points third Kyle Drablow for a great try and impressive forward play, second Hamish Watson for all round good play in both attack and defence and a great under the post speech and first Charlie Cochrane for a superb all round display.
