Best performance for years as Farnham romp to 79-8 win

Mark Weeks10 Oct 2016 - 08:26

This year’s Farnham squad is possibly the strongest in the club's history.

From your pitch side reporter, Geoff Bond.

The score says it all as Farnham swept Teddington aside at a packed Monkton Lane on Saturday. The crowd hooted for more as the referee called time early in this top of the table encounter anticipated as Farnham’s biggest test of the season.
Last year's matches had been close both home and away with honours even. This was different - weakened by injuries to some of their front five heavies, Teddington, after securing an early penalty, were simple blown away by a rampant Farnham XV.
This year’s Farnham squad is possibly the strongest in the club's history. After a physical start with blows traded by both sides, Teddington enjoyed first blood when Luke Jermyn, isolated at the breakdown, was penalised for holding onto the ball. 0-3.
Farnham responded immediately from the kick off and then scored at more than a point a minute in the first half and eventually over the entire match.
Penalty to Farnham and an astute kick to the corner. -Lenny Jennings accurate into the line-out to Pete Daly and from the drive the ball was shipped out to Toby Salmon who, with the Teddington backs blitzing in defence. puts an exquisite chip over to flying winger Luke Jermyn to dot down unopposed. Swirling breeze frustrating for kicker Mike Salmon. 5-3.
The intensity is beginning to ramp up. Teddington have come to play but are being battered by the sheer cussedness of the Farnham defence. Smashed back Teddington concede the line out and Dave Hurley crashes over for Farnham's second.
Easing up through the gears, Mike Salmon spins out of the 22 and breaks numerous tackles, an adroit off load frees up the colossus Pete Daly for the third. Easy conversion. 17-3.
Then a crowd of several hundred enjoys the try of the season. Toby Comley gathers the ball in the Farnham 22 from the kick off and runs through, around and past the entire Teddington team. A tremendous try by a superb player enjoying the form of his distinguished career!
Stunning stuff from Farnham and the crowd enjoying every minute. The Teddington scrum is devastated by Joris, Jennings and Naisbitt backed by the Williams boys Ian and Dan. On the visitors put in there is havoc at the base as they retreat 10 or 15 metres at each scrum. So scrum turnover frees Daly on the charge and on to Toby Salmon. Easy score. 27-3.
And repeat almost immediately. Scrum carnage, Daly pick up and on to an unstoppable Andy Naisbitt. Try and easy points with the extras for Mike Salmon 34-3.
Teddington are suffering and the scrum is beginning to crumble. Daly is over again to close the half at 39-3.
The rout continues and despite Teddington's valiant efforts they simply fail to contain Farnham's pass and support game. The visitor's commitment is palpable but they are being blown asunder. Mass Farnham breakout spearheaded by a turning twisting Mike Salmon. On to brother Toby with easy extras for the supplier. Proud mum in the stand.
Its becoming more than rout when replacement prop JamesTrodden blasts over for his second try in two weeks with the conversion easy for Mike Salmon. Again from the kick off another Farnham attack, fast hands and winger Ed Weeks gets in on the act with an adroit finish. 58-3.
To Teddington’s full credit they don’t give up and take full advantage of Farnham’s carelessness and naivety by at the line-out. Try in the corner for Teddington. 58-8. The scoreboard under the watchful eye of Jimmy O'Sullivan is struggling to keep up and the referee's pens are running out.
Teddington’s try stings Farnham into action. With Teddington still euphoric, a short side kick off is gathered by Toby Salmon who releases Corlett to score under the posts. The visitors have been destroyed. Another Daly rampage pushes the score to 72-8 including Mike Salmon for the extras and a Salmon double act finishes off proceedings. Toby scoring a try showing his belligerent best and brother Mike to polish the gem.
A huge 79-8 win over albeit weakened opponents. But make no mistake this is a very talented, fit Farnham squad. My view is that they will go this season unbeaten. Their only opposition is themselves. Believe and enjoy boys these seasons do not come round often.
Next Saturday, Farnham take on Haywards Heath in the cup. KO 3.00pm. On current form it would be no surprise for the team to run out onto the hallowed turf of Twickenham in the final of that competition.
Podium Points
Toby Salmon - virtuoso in every facet - 3
Pete Daly - a human tank - colossal performance - 2
Dan Williams - showed off to Mum who was up from Torquay - 1
