Another agonising away defeat

Another agonising away defeat

Toby Salmon9 Mar - 08:52

Same old story

Farnham travelled to Maidenhead on Saturday afternoon, seeking a 3rd consecutive win. Farnham very much mid table whilst Maidenhead needing a win to bolster their survival chances. Farnham welcomed back Eddie Buckton on the wing in the only change and opted for 3 forwards on the bench. The home team kicked off.

A fast game was expected on the 4G pitch and Farnham started well. An early penalty allowed them to gain field position as they looked to be physical against a lean, dynamic Maidenhead side. An Eddie Buckton break got Farnham into 22 as they looked to build a patient attack. Harry West controlled the tempo and slipped a nice ball to Ollie Kirkpatrick who dived over for the first score of the game. Conversion successful, 0-7. Maidenhead responded well though and when a driving maul was stopped illegally, Jonny Vincent was given 10 minutes in the bin. Although the Maidenhead hooker received a yellow minutes later for a high tackle on Shawa Rai. Farnham had plenty of possession in the first 20 mins however Maidenhead were making a mess of breakdown that halted momentum. However another patient attack proved effective. Jonny Vincent was stopped just short of the line and with defenders dragged, veteran Ollie Brown found space out wide to dot down for his maiden score of the season. Conversion missed, 0-12.

It took until the 30th minute for the hosts to get on the scoreboard when a break through the middle released their winger and although Toby Simmons tracked him down, he offloaded to the full back who scoreD in the corner. Conversion successful, 7-12. Maidenhead now had some momentum and were moving the ball well on the fast surface. Their flanker showed great power and pace as he scored their 2nd try and Maidenhead now had the lead. 14-12. Farnham held out till half time but will be disappointed to be trialing at the break with so much possession and territory.

Harrison Horner came on to add some more power as Farnham kicked off. The hosts continued their momentum when a backs move saw their right winger dive in under the posts. 21-12. Farnham had to get back into the game and Toby Simmons found some space to show his pace and get into the 22. A penalty was won which allowed Farnham to kick to the corner and the rolling maul was very effective, resulting in Ollie Kirkpatrick diving over for his 2nd score of the game. Conversion missed, 21-17. Maidenhead thought they had their bonus point score but Ben Stevens held up their loose head prop to deny them.

The game was disjointed but Farnham knew they had a chance as it stayed a 2 point game. A trademark Oscar Henderson jackle won a penalty and allowed them to kick to the corner. Although the initial maul was stopped short, Harrison Horner was on hand to dive over for the bonus point score. Conversion successful, 21-24. There was 9 minutes left on the clock and with the home team desperate for a win, they threw everything at Farnham. However Farnham did not help themselves with poor decision making leaving them trapped in their own half. Maidenhead were powering through weak tackles and their centre managed to score in the corner to retake the lead. 26-24. They gathered the restarted and saw out the last minute for a crucial 5 points. FT 26-24.

Another tough away day for Farnham who let their lead slip twice and picked up 2 points as they stay in 7th.

Presidents podium:
3- Ollie Kirkpatrick
2- Harrison Horner
1- Harry West
