Farnham blow away TWs for back to back wins

Toby Salmon2 Mar - 09:05

Fun in the sun

Farnham welcomed 3rd placed Tunbridge Wells to Monkton Lane on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Farnham made a couple of changes with Ollie Kirkpatrick coming in at 6 with George Bellamy moving into the row. Harry West and Ollie Brown came back in as halfbacks with Alex Young shifting to the wing. Farnham kicked off with a swirling breeze and the sun behind them.

It was the visitors who started the best with a mixture of poor discipline and handling errors costing Farnham field position. Although Farnham repelled the initial attack, TWs managed to find space in the left corner to dot down for the first score of the game. Conversion missed, 0-5. The home team struggled to get into the game with the set piece struggling and lack of attacking continuity. However once Farnham got their hands on the ball and built up some phases, they were looking good and got into TWs 22. A penalty gave them a chance to kick to the corner and set up a rolling maul. It was just stopped short but Harry West found Toby Salmon on a crash ball line and he dotted down for Farnham's first score. Conversion successful, 7-5. Farnham now had control and looked to move the heavy TWs pack around. Harry West and Ollie Brown brought a quick yet controlled tempo with many of Farnham’s attacking threats getting early touches. On the 15 minute mark, a patient attack brought Farnham close to the line and the dynamic Shawa Rai managed to sneak through a gap for the 2nd score. Conversion successful, 14-5.

From the restart, a great box kick was chased hard by Alex Young who made a great tackle and counter rucked to get the ball back. The ball was moved from side to side as Farnham entered the 22 again. Ben Stevens was stopped short but as the ball was recycled, Ollie Brown squeezed a brilliant pasS through 2 tacklers and found Toby Simmons who strolled in for the score. Conversion successful and a brilliant score. 21-5. TWs responded well with a 50-22 to give them a good platform and their centre broke through the middle to score under the posts. 21-12. Farnham had to withstand a lot of pressure as the half drew to a close as TWs looked for another score. However they were held up and Farnham managed to get out of a trouble. A TWs scrum on their own 22 looked fairly routine but Shawa Rai snaffled up the 8 and the ball spilt out and was scooped up by Oscar Henderson who went in untouched for the bonus point score. 28-12. Half time shortly followed and a brilliant first half performance.

Farnham wanted to keep up the high tempo as it had been so successful for them so far. Another very good Harry West box kick was well claimed but the pass infield was picked off again by Oscar Henderson for another gift wrapped score and the number 8 galloped in for his 2nd score. 33-12. This game was far from over though as TWs continued to carry hard. An attacking scrum gave them a good platform and they found space on the blindside which was well finished. Conversion successful, 33-19. Farnham were miles offside of the kickoff which put them under more pressure and when Toby Simmons was harshly sin binned for a knock on, Farnham had to regroup. Harrison Horner came on to bolster the pack. A TWs lineout was stopped illegally and their number 8 acted fastest with a quick tap to dive into the corner. 33-24.

Farnham managed to see out the yellow card period although were pinned in their own half. The pressure was starting to build but man of the match Oscar Henderson released the pressure and broke through 2 tackles. He sprinted away, drew the fullback to put in Ben Stevens who juggled the ball but held on and dived in under the posts. Conversion successful, 40-24. Ben Jones came on at 15 as Farnham looked to see out the game. They were playing the game in the right areas and looked for another score. A knock on 5 meters out was booted clear and although Toby Simmons got back well to clean up, the TWs scrum half secured the turnover and from his quick tap, was cut down by Ben Stevens who was shown a yellow card.

Despite the speed of the game, the intensity never faulted and with 5 minutes to go, both teams were chasing further scores. A rolling maul score in the corner made it a closer game, 40-29. Raoul Larkins came on and the game was very open. TWs were chasing another bonus point and in doing so moved the ball wide. However in doing so the ball came loose which Toby Simmons picked up and sprinted towards the line. He was just scragged down but managed to offload to Ben Jones who hacked ahead with Toby Salmon sprinting past the TW 10 and his kick ahead just avoid the post and dotted down for his 2nd score. The conversion was successful and the final whistle followed. 47-29.

A brilliant performance from Farnham who thoroughly outplayed 3rd Tunbridge and collected yet another 5 points at home. We remain in 7th but close the gap to the teams ahead of us. Maidenhead away awaits next week.

Presidents podium:
3- Oscar Henderson
2- Sam Voight
1- Harry West
