Poor start results in another away defeat

Farnham travelled to Old Alleynians on a mild afternoon looking to follow up on last weekends win. Farnham named an unchanged squad which is a bit unheard of but made the trip in good spirits. The home side kicked off with Farnham opting to play with the conditions first half.

The home side certainly started the better of the 2 sides and opened the scoring with a break down the left hand side and their full back finished off well to dot down under the posts. 7-0. More missed tackling cost Farnham minutes later with their winger dotting down for the 2nd score. 14-0 after 15 minutes. Farnham couldn’t get their attack going and were just not on the same page in defence. The home team did produce a very good score when a crossfield kick in their own 22 was gathered by their right winger and he shrugged off 2 defenders to go the length. 21-0. They got their bonus point after 25 minutes with another break through their backs released their scrum half who just about got in for the score. 26-0.

Farnham had to respond and were a shadow of the side they were last week. They managed to string together some phases and earned a breakdown penalty. They kicked to the corner and set up a rolling maul that was patient and very well executed which resulted in Jonny Vincent dotting down. Conversion missed, 26-5. The Farnham fightback was short lived though as they failed to clear their lines and off the resulting lineout, the fly half breezed in under the posts. 33-5. Farnham managed to get a score before the break though, with Ollie Brown finding Toby Salmon who managed to get the ball away which was well collected by Max Williams for a try in the right corner. Conversion successful, 33-12. Alleynians almost managed to score again but thankfully the ball was knocked on, on the line. 33-12 HT.

Farnham rung changes at half time with Jack Buxton, Marco Azevedo and Ben Stevens all coming on. An Alleynians box kick was well gathered by Oscar Henderson who bounced off the onrushing flanker who was lucky to avoid a card for the high shot. The visitors looked to be more expansive with the ball and show much more aggression in defence. They held out Alleynians for 10 minutes which forced them to kick for goal and extend their lead. 36-12. More defence issues kicked in moments later with Alleynians getting round Farnham and their left winger dotted down in the corner. Conversion successful, 43-12. Farnham kept looking better in attack however the home team captain intercepted the pass and although he was caught by Ben Stevens, the ball was recycled and their number 8 dotted down under the posts. 50-12.

Farnham got their 3rd score when Joey Wood got an intercept of his own and raced in under the posts. Salmons drop goal conversion hit the bar, whoops. 50-17. Farnham were chasing a bonus point try and although they were stopped a few times, they kept going till the end and after a few close carries, Toby Salmon managed to dot down from close range for the try. Conversion successful, 50-24 at full time.

A disappointing afternoon for Farnham who were nowhere near their best but at least they came away with a point. We welcome CS Stags to Monkton Lane next week.
