u22s Surrey Finals Day

Pip Henderson7 Apr - 20:45

Future looking positive for the club.

A hugely positive day for Farnham, with 18 of the boys representing the club in the Surrey U22 Cup Finals Day.

The top four teams coming out of Christmas, Farnham, Camberley, Guildford and Pacific Islanders, set the stage for a high-quality competition, and it didn’t disappoint.

The opening match against a strong Guildford side, stacked with Surrey players, was always going to be a serious test. The first half was a real arm wrestle, played into the wind, with both teams showing excellent defensive organisation and creating chances. At 0–0 at halftime, the intensity was clear for everyone watching, big collisions coming in from Wormwell, Foskett, Dunkimata and Sims, while Baker and Evans led a well-functioning lineout, supported by the disruptive work of the Lewis brothers.

Defensively, the back line stood firm, Douglas, Brockman, Platt and Thorp all putting in huge shifts, with Thorp also carrying hard and consistently breaking the gain line.

The second half saw Farnham take control with the wind at their backs, following positive input from the coaching team of Salmon, Vincent, Thomas and the Henderson brothers (supporting Fin Hills whilst away).

The breakthrough came from a penalty near the 5m line, with Wormwell quick to react with a tap-and-go, powering over for the opening try, converted by Platt. That score opened the game up. From the restart, Farnham retained possession and built through phases before Thorp again punched through the middle, offloading to Wingfield on the wing, who showed great pace and footwork to finish in style. Baker then added another to seal an excellent win.

That set up a final against local rivals Camberley, who had overcome a resilient but understrength Islanders side.

The final was exactly what you’d expect, tight, physical and fiercely contested throughout. Both sides defended superbly, and it came down to fine margins, with Camberley scoring a late try to edge it 10–7. Farnham’s try came through Wormwell, with the conversion added by Platt, who unfortunately had to come off shortly after with an ankle injury.

While the result didn’t quite go Farnham’s way, the performance, commitment and quality on show were outstanding. The squad left the field with heads held high, reflecting a strong club pathway that continues to develop homegrown talent from academy through U22s into senior rugby.

A great day for the club, and a clear sign of what’s coming through.
