The Academy A side turned out today in force to play their re-scheduled Quins cup round 2 match vs Old Emanuel Lions.
This match was originally due to have been played away at Old Emanuel's ground on the A3 in New Malden. This winter's theme has been waterlogged pitches and so a vote of thanks is due to the volunteers who work so hard at Farnham to keep the pitches playable. This allowed the match to go ahead at Wilkinson Way instead.
Dry days this winter seem to have been very few and far between and so a shower before the game started seemed appropriate. The game started in the dry however and despite the greasy conditions the boys started to play as coach Hamish Watson has been willing them to do. No one-up rugby and get the ball moving down the line. Simple to say but hard to do.
Nevertheless, these tactics certainly put the Lions' defence to the sword and by half time the boys had 6 tries and one conversion to their names for 32 unanswered points. With apologies for any errors or omissions, Try scorers were Ed Robinson, Ben Atkins, Ollie Jones, Ed Robinson, Ben Cregeen and Ben Atkins again.
The second half started in a similar vein, albeit with torrential rain to contend with. However, against the run of play, the first to score this time was the Lions who found a rare hole in the Farnham defence to score a 7 pointer. In response Farnham put 4 more well worked tries together. This half's scorers were Archie Rawnsley x2, Max Campbell-Harris and amazingly his first competitive try in over 10 years of playing Rugby at Farnham for Max Parker. Congrats Max!
An excellent performance in Biblical conditions and leaves Farnham second in their group of four in the Quins Cup. Next step in the cup will be a triangular semi-final vs the other second placed teams in Groups A,B and C.
