Farnham U15 Girls, bolstered by a number of friends from Alton RFC, played a National Cup game against a well organised and experienced Basingstoke side. This was the first 15-a-side match for most of the Farnham and Alton players. However, despite conceding four tries in the first half, heads never dropped, and they grew in confidence in the 2nd half. The second half saw Farnham gain ascendency in the scrum and despite some strong running and ferocious tackling, were unable to convert their chances while Basingstoke scored a single break-away try. Final score Farnham 0 - 27 Basingstoke.
Farnham U13 Girls won their first ever Surrey Cup cross-pitch, seven-a-side game 9 tries to 8 in a seesaw encounter with Dorking. The visitors, most of whom had played cup rugby last season, started the stronger and led 5 tries to 3 at half time. But Farnham had the better of the 2nd half to snatch victory.
These games followed an “Inner Warrior” women and girls rugby training session at Monkton Lane. The Farnham coaching team were ably supported by the Harlequins Womens’ star players Sarah Beckett (England) and Lucy Packer (Wales 7s) together with three three coaches from the RFU.
Of the 60 women and girls who braved wind and rain to come to Farnham Rugby club and give rugby a go, 16 had never attended a rugby training session at Farnham before and some had never picked up a rugby ball.
Tracey Parry, Farnham U11 Girls coach, who had refereed the U13 match said, “These sessions are designed to inspire a new generation of women and girl players. Despite the wind and rain, everyone has a fantastic time and we have achieved our goal. There can be no doubt that our women and girls section will continue to go from strength to strength.”
