Bs brave Irish weather
The London Irish festival, which lays claim to the world's largest minis festival, was plagued by atrocious conditions. Wind, rain and mud challenged the kids but all the teams were impressive in their ability to hold on to the ball. After a delayed start due to changes to the pitches (the U7s tournament was cancelled) we opened against the hosts. We were beaten 5-4 but it should have been a one point win because tries were wrongly disallowed for putting the ball down on the line. Our tries came from a Rhys brace, Ollie D and Fergus.
Shelter was sought by all possible means be it the dugout, club shop or bar (the warmth of the radiators being a particular attraction!). Next up we struggled to a 2-4 loss to Tonbridge our scores coming from Fergus and Joseph.
Our best effort came in a 6-6 draw v Chipstead thanks to two tries from Ollie D, Sam M, Fergus, Rhys and Ollie S. A special mention to Sam M for a great arcing run right and left during which time no defender as much as laid a finger on him!
Our final fixture resulted in a 6-4 defeat to Guildfordians in which Joseph nailed two scores and Rhys the other one (plus a phantom try). Not surprisingly 3 or 4 hands went up to volunteer to come off at half time! The kids stuck at it remarkably well. Real character-building stuff. Well done! Hopefully by now everyone has warmed up!
So that's it for tag - it was clear some weeks ago that many of the kids are chomping at the bit for contact. Bring it on!
