Barbarian squad enjoy a chilly trip to Guildford
Guildford were great hosts and we survived the cold wind and impending rain. It was great to hook up with the two Pumas squads as well.
We won our first two games (Guildford and Sutton & Epsom) and lost the second two (Teddington and the last one to London Irish somewhat controversially with the last action of the game).
Throughout all the games the squad displayed some very good support running with some notable individual finishing. Katie was unlucky not have scored a few more tries, always looking for space, and, together with Henry, showed a willingness to take the ball at first receiver and make inroads into some organised and determined defences. Henry really is formidable when he takes the ball up in a straight line. Josh and Harry K made some fantastic stepping runs resulting in fine tries and were willing defenders. Charlie showed great presence of mind to score an excellent breakaway try and was tireless in chasing tags. Harvey and Freddie linked well and the latter was on hand to score in a move when I think the whole team handled the ball. Harry M created some excellent space and was unlucky not to score a lot more. He kept running hard all day and made a number of good passes. Oliver was unlucky with a few runs but held his own in the defensive line.
Overall, our attack was good. Perhaps we could have looked to make some passes quicker but overall we dropped few balls and kept supporting. In defence we suffered a bit from chasing the ball and not holding our defensive line but this was true of all the teams we played. We also suffered in the last two games from a bit of tiredness, but heads did not go down. It was great to see them redouble their efforts to try and get ahead in both of those games.
