Farnham C V Alton Development festival
By Jackie Lewis
A great but exhausting day
With the rain lashing down in the morning, fearful that the morning was going to be a washout, the U11’s C squads floated their way along the A31 to Alton. With fortune smiling on the brave, the rain stopped and the sun came out just as we arrived, allowing great rugby weather with muddy, but soft pitches.
We took two squads with us, 19 in total, however, due to illnesses etc three players could not make it leaving us with 16, not enough for two teams. Houston we have a problem! A decision was made to play one team with revolving substitutes playing both squads fixtures. This meant that the boys played six matches on the bounce, playing a total of 8 matches in total. Yes, they played twice as much rugby as anyone else that was there. Were they down hearted? No!
Did the fact of playing six consecutive matches daunt them? Not at all. The boys accepted the challenge with great relish, showing great teamwork and spirit, despite playing some mixed ability teams. Not once did their heads drop, they were a shining example to the club, never giving up despite being on the wrong end of the score lines.
All in all, a disappointing day if one looks solely at the results, losing every match, but a complete success is one looks at the enthusiasm, the teamwork, the spirit, that each and everyone of the boys put into the game. All of us coaches are extremely proud of the boys, and we believe that they were a shining beacon and example to Farnham RUFC, the Club should be proud of them. They deserve to be mentioned in Dispatches. The main thing is all the boys enjoyed themselves finishing the festival with big muddy tired smiles.
