Alton vs Farnham
By Toby Glover
Battle in the mud
The A team took on Alton RFC in an away game that we had not played for a number of years .
Farnham started well, pinning the home team
back into their own 22 and eventually scoring from continuous pressure . This lead though was quickly pulled back as Farnham infringed and then indiscipline saw Alton given a 5 mt line out that let the home team drive over to keep the pressure on at 5-7.
The Alton kick and chase tactic was very effective and again put Farnham under pressure this led to a loose ball hacked through and the Red and Black win the foot race to the line and put Alton in the lead at 12 -7 .
A strong word and shake up from the captain saw the visitors quickly take the game back in to the Alton half and after numerous pick and drives they finally went wide and the centers crashed through to level the score at 12 a piece just before half time
Farnham disciple had seen numerous penalties go against them and the half time talk steady the squad . Ball retention and keeping the ball moving saw the Black and white grind there way up the hill to the Alton try line but time and again the defence held firm and Alton scrambled the ball away pushing Farnham back to their 22 .
Finally after 20 minutes of neither team getting the upper hand and Farnham having 1 try denied the black and white broke wide and quickly stretching the defenders line which gave Farnham the lead as they crashed over to the right of the posts. With their tails up the visitors went in search of another try driving in to the Hampshire champions half time after time . Consistent pressure from the dominant possession had Farnham move the ball both left and right searching for gaps and slowly pushing in to Altons 22 As Farnham stretching the Reds wide they Finally they got the overlap and took the game beyond Altons ability to fight back with the final score finishing 12 26 a brilliant Farnham win.
A big scalp for the boys as this squad had not been beaten in 18 months and are Hampshire county champions for the past 2years ,a great show of being able to absorbe alot of physical pressure and fight back from behind on the score .
