Farnham U15Bs vs Reigate U15B

The Narrowest of Margins...

Match Report: Duncan Mcleod

On a surprisingly Sunny Sunday morning at Queens Avenue Aldershot, Farnham U15b’s got off to a flying start in their friendly match agains Reigate. Playing up the hill and against a slight breeze, Farnham quickly pressed Reigate back deep into their own 22 and had a period of sustained pressure. This eventually wore down the Reigate defence as a fast passing move down the Farnham back line was ably finished off by Jack Gilbert in the corner

From the restart Reigate seemed stung into action as they immediate got onto the front foot. The two Farnham props Josh Smith and Scott Atchison, who sportingly played for Reigate in the first period, pressed forward with speed and power. With direct and powerful Reigate running, Farnham were forced to concede a 5 metre Scrum which was won by the Reigate pack. From this great platform, the Reigate backs broke the Farnham line to score next to the posts. This was going to be a very entertaining game....

Going behind immediately got a reaction from Farnham who again pressed forward in waves. As they neared the Reigate line, Reigate managed to win the ball with the intension of a swift counter attack. However, Samuel Johnston read a loose pass perfectly to intercept and break through the Reigate line, scoring under the posts in style. He then duly converted the try to extend the Farnham lead

From this point forward Reigate started to get some momentum winning the breakdowns with fast arriving forward support. Finally, the ball came to Josh Smith whose power and direct running almost broke the Farnham defence. He was eventually stopped 1 metre from the Farnham line, but with the subsequent fast ball to their backs Reigate managed to finish off the try and retake the lead

There followed a period of renewed Farnham pressure backed up with some solid tackling from Ben Seymour and Jack Gilbert and some strong running from Samuel Johnston . As the pressure grew Farnham won a scrum 10 metres from the Reigate line. The subsequent push by the Farnham pack from the Reigate put-in caused problems. The Reigate pack moving backwards steadily somehow managed to retain the ball. Their scrum half securing the ball passed to one of the Reigate backs. He broke through a gap in the Farnham defence and won the foot race, the full length of the pitch, to score an unexpected break out try and increase the Reigate lead

Farnham 12 Reigate 19

As the half neared an end Reigate managed to create an overlap on their left wing to score the final try of the half in the corner. As the half time whistle sounded the score did not reflect the closeness of the contest.....

For the second half Farnham had the aid of both the hill and the wind. Using this Samuel Johnston sent through a lovely grubber kick which he ably finished to reduce the deficit

Farnham 17 Reigate 24

Farnham now had their tails up and with some energetic forwards play epitomised by the penetrating runs from Ben Seymour. Following another flowing Farnham back move Jack Gilbert again was the right man in the right place to score his second try of the game in the corner

Farnham 22 Reigate 24

The Farnham resurgence was halted for a short time, when Jake Kimberley and Dylan Milner ( Farnham players on loan ) combined to extend the Reigate lead. Jake was quickly up to the defence following a kick through producing a tremendous tackle. He immediately got to his feet and stole the ball breaking through to just shy of the Farnham line. Following a deft offload in the tackle, Dylan Milner crossed the Farnham line to score the Try

Farnham 22 Reigate 31

However, the way the game was going it was far from over with Farnham’s never say die attitude. They pressed forward in waves building the pressure on the Reigate defence. Following a penalty in the Reigate 22 Ben Seymour eventually broke the Reigate defence to score under the posts. This was converted by Samuel Johnston leading to a nail biting last 3 minutes

Farnham 29 Reigate 31

Farnham not wanting to lose pressed forwards again eventually winning a penalty kick. This was converted by Samuel Johnston with practically the last kick of the game to give Farnham a win by the narrowest of margins. What a very entertaining game from two good sides both trying to play entertaining running Rugby
