What a difference a week makes! After a lack lustre performance last week Farnham stepped up to the mark this week and took on Guilford head to head in a match that all spectators enjoyed. Guildford visited Farnham as the on-form team and quickly made their presence felt. On the ball Guildford always looked dangerous, getting over the gain line and breaking the Farnham defence. Farnham had to dig deep to prevent early scores with some excellent last man tackling. On balance however Farnham had the majority of the possession and only lapses in concentration and defence allowed Guildford to catch them on counter attacks to win the match. Farnham backs benefitted from extra ruck and maul training and with the tight 5 working well together. They dominated the scrum and competed well at the line. With the ball in hand Farnham backs put some excellent passages of play together and on several occasions were only defeated by some try saving tackles by Guildford. Guildford are not chasing the lead of Division 2 for nothing, when they did gain possession their passing was exemplary and the Wing turned in a blistering pace leaving Farnham players in his wake. Three times in 10 minutes the same move by Guildford created scoring opportunities. Quick ball to the wing with an overlap manoeuvre and three times they scored; converting each one to build up a commanding 21:0 lead by half time. In the second half Farnham stepped up the pressure and several times got to the Guildford try line only to lose possession at a critical point. Guildford’s tackling in defence was solid and a breach looked unlikely until a breakthrough was made by Rob Butcher on the Farnham wing leading to a Farnham try. A late period of sustained pressure by Farnham in the Guildford 22 saw Guildford concede penalty after penalty and Farnham threw everything into it with an extended period of play taking place in the Guildford try zone but failing to ground the ball. Guildford responded with some strong defence before managing to kick for touch on the final whistle. Guildford were good visitors, the match was played in a true competitive youth rugby spirit and again Farnham were fortunate to have a good referee who earned the respect of players and spectators alike. Jonny Daines as flanker was awarded man of the match for an excellent all round performance including penetrating breaks and staunch defensive tackling.
