The sun shone on the righteous U11Bs at the London Irish Festival

The weather in Farnham was wetter than a wet thing but at London Irish, the sun shone on the U11 Bs who despite a long day's rugby delivered the goods

Match Report: Christine Bellenger

Whilst there were clouds and rain back at home in Farnham on Sunday the sun shone and the rain abated until the end of a very long day of rugby which the B’s should deservingly feel very proud of.

Our first team were a touring team from Dublin who, form our own tour experiences, we hoped were suffering from the previous night’s celebrations and lack of sleep; unfortunately this was not the case as they had purely come over for the tournament and they were certainly all fired up and ready for action.
It was a very physical game with a great deal of ice packs being used, predominantly for the opposition, and most of the play being at their end as we so nearly scored on numerous occasions. However their haphazard defence managed to prevent our boys getting through and we ended with a draw and perhaps a wake-up call to the boys to remember their strength as a team and to play their own game.

Teddington 0 – Farnham 3
Try scorers: Barney Swift, Thomas Welsh (2)

A fantastic performance from the boys with some exceptional tackling from Louis and brilliant running from Barney to score the initial try, swiftly (pardon the pun) followed by 2 further try scores from Thomas. The defence was solid and effective as we managed to maintain our record of conceding no tries.
Overall a solid team performance, ably using the full width of the pitch and including some solid passing with all members taking part and being responsible for the final score.

Chobham 0 – Farnham 1
Try scorers: Finbar Wormwell

Wow what a game! In asking for some quotes from the local spectators I was provided with the following:
“Determined”, “Excellent teamwork”, “Brilliant tackling from the team”, “Testosterone fuelled encounter”.
Worthy of note in this match are Cameron for his excellent tackling and Ben Walters who took quite a few physical hits and was a fundamental game maker for the try that was brilliantly taken by Finbar.

London Irish 0 – Farnham 1
Try scorers: Thomas Welsh

How ironic that the Welsh score the winning try against the Irish!
Perhaps this try was some compensation to Thomas for him being swung around, high tackled and then watching the penalty being awarded to the opposition. Even the opposition parents were surprised by the decision, but our boys were professional and mature in their attitude and not one of them argued with the referee decision. Shame the same could not be said of one of the LI parents who was quite demonstrative in showing us all his ‘passion’ for the game and his personal support of his team, thankfully he was escorted off the pitch by their coach and the game continued.
It was a very physically demanding game and even the referee came off exhausted and rather shaken. A deserved win for the team who, having learnt from the first game, played their strengths and pulled together to again keep a clean sheet.

As we hadn’t lost a game within our pool of 6 and had conceded no tries in any of the pool matches we knew we were in with a chance of being in a final but were overjoyed to be told we were in the cup final, although this exuberation turned a little to trepidation when we discovered who were to be our opponents.

Cup Final
Ironsides 3 – Farnham 1
Try scorers: Tom Horrell-Tidbury

A fantastically sneaking and swift interception from Tom led to the initial try of the game, however unfortunately we were no match for the very fast paced game that Ironsides played. With the comment that one of their children looked like he was ‘fuelled on blue Smarties’ we were going to struggle but the Farnham boys played well and certainly did themselves justice. It was a good game, with an excellent referee and ultimately we lost to the better team.

The medal ceremony was held in the same good nature with true sportsmanship of both finalists supporting one another for the presentations and all then providing a supportive cheer to the organisers at the last LI tournament to be played at The Avenue.

Man of the match – Louis Morgan (for his determination and utter courage)

Final word - what an amazing way to end the tournament season and a true testament to the team work of the Under 11 B’s.
