Hard Fought Match goes down to the wire...
Cobham brought their unbeaten record to Monkton Road and together these U13s served up a wonderfully entertaining and fiercely contested match which the visitors just edged by the odd try.
Straight from the kick-off it was evident there was going to be no quarter given by either side. It was the away team quickest out of the blocks as they spread the ball down the line and their winger burst clear to open the scoring. Farnham struck back with a surging run from second row Sam Hibberd, showing a clean pair of heels to the opposition back line. Before half-time the home team were trailing again after a misplaced kick was returned from the half way line, and the first period ended without further score.
Following rousing team talks from both sides the second half continued with even greater intensity, players showing courage and determination in their tackling and rucking. An early score for Cobham with another powerful break away try might have sealed the match, but Farnham showed tenacity and resilience to force their way back into the game. Spells of possession and territory finally paid off when Sam Hibberd wrestled the ball over the try line to reduce the deficit to one.
As the clock ticked down the game was finely poised. The home team were camped in the Cobham half for long periods, but the danger of an interception was always present with the powerful centres waiting to pounce. In the final play of the match, Farnham had a chance to equalise from a 5 metre penalty, but the Cobham defence held resolute and they smothered the ball out of play for a euphoric victory.
A tremendous game, full of skill and passion, and sportingly applauded by the players at the final whistle.
