All players played very well with 4 players foregoing their opportunity to play in the B’s festival and stepping up from the White Squad (B’s) to cover for holidays in the Green Squad (A’s), all of whom fitted in very well, a testament to the strength in depth of the squads. London Irish 16th March 2008 Farnham U7s “Green” squad, competing in their first competetive tournament won four out of four matches to top their pool with maximum points, beating strong teams from Aldershot and Fleet, Reading, Maidenhead and Reading Abbey despite horrendous playing conditions. Hugh was glowing in his praise – great team play, and brilliant defence. The highlight for me was John accidentally tacking the opposition coach! Unfortunately, the final, due to take place at half time between the premiership match between London Irish and Wasps was cancelled because of the weather, but congratulations to all involved; the kids were magnificent
Haslemere 17th February 2008 What a great day we had last Sunday, the weather was lovely, the turn out great and the hospitality as good as usual from Haslemere. The new squads all played very well. In an A Squad fixture on a full size pitch 6 of our Green Squad beat 7 Haslemere A players 4-3. According to Isaac and Daniel "The pitch was huge, but we scored 4 tries anyway!". White, Gold and Red squads rather out numbered their opposition so ended up playing mixed teams, with one result 10-8 and the other 10-6, a feast of tries and tagging and lots of fun for everyone. Including the excited parents.
Bank of England 10th February 2008 Leon's team (now called Red) drew both of their games 7-7 and 5-5, which is fantastic for a development squad, Hugh's team (now called Green) won their first game 8-1 and their second (with Charlie and John playing for the opposition) 8-3, Alan's team (now called White) won their first game 5-2, their second 6-1 and were drawing their third game 1-1, before the final whistle and hot dogs became available! Whilst Westy's team (now called Gold) won their last game and lost the first two after some ferocious defending. What a great day, shame about the facilities, the weather, the nicely bagged hot dogs and the free beer, but we'll be back at our clubhouse soon. PS Don't forget to load your photos onto snapfish....
Chichester on 25th November 2007
West Team and South Teams represented Farnham U7’s, with some enthusiastic East Team players mixed amongst the two teams. After narrowly losing the first game against the hosts Chichester 3-5, the West Team went on to win their remaining two games against Petersfield 4-2 and a second Chichester team 5-2. The South Team won both their games against Petersfield 5-3 and Chichester 4-2. All players are showing tremendous improvement in their team play, which is a testament to their commitment and above all the fun that they are having. The mixed ability squads are really bringing the best out of all individuals.
Wasps tournament 11th November Farnham U7's took 30 players and split them into three mixed ability teams, as they have been doing all season. Head Coach Leon Heward-Mills was very proud of the effort, commitment and enthusiasm shown by all players, especially to come out as winners of the age group against such mighty opposition. The A team drew their first game against Wasps 5-5 and narrowly lost their second game 8-7 against Wasps. Team B ran in 6 tries in their opening game against Ealing, conceding only 3 and also won their second game by 4-0 against Wasps. Team C won both their games, the first against Ealing was never in doubt with a 12-4 victory and the second against Wasps was a closer affair with Farnham coming from behind to take the spoils 6-4.
Grasshoppers tournament 4th November
The U7s mixed ability North Squad came of age this weekend when they represented and were runners-up in the Grasshoppers Festival tournament. The teams progress over the past weeks has been immense with starring individual performances in attack and defense but most impressive has been the support play and patience with ball in hand ensuring that passes are made and continuity maintained. This was no better displayed than in one early passage of play in the first game against Ealing, which the team won 3-1, when the ball was passed at least eight or nine times before scoring the initial try. Such play built confidence and resulted in a more convincing win against the Bank of England 3-1 in the second fixture. The third game proved more of a test against the ultimate winners of the tournament Teddington although a 2-2 draw was a fair reflection of how close the game was. These initial results meant that the squad came top in the league stage with a better try difference than Teddington and they then went on to beat the hosts Grasshoppers 6-2 in the semi-final when some excellent running with the ball meant that several good tries were scored. The final against Teddington was hard fought but the squad eventually lost 3-1. The day was a very positive experience for all involved not least the boys who worked hard and kept concentration well and the parents whose effervescent support kept spirits high. Well done everyone.
Petersfield A tournament 14th October Leon says - a very long day at Petersfield resulted in the combined U7 North East squad qualifying for the knock out phase by coming second in our pool, and going on to lose a close semi-final against Chichester 3-2 (from 3-0). In the pool we played 5, won 3, lost 1 (2-1) drew 1. Hayley and I were really encouraged by the whole team's attitude. Everyone was impressed by their phenomenal defence - time and again coming up in a line and tagging superbly. Two comments received: "...how on earth did you manage to teach your kids to tag like that?" and "...your lot are in the wrong age group - they're playing like Under 8s!" Well done everyone. We were up against some very good teams, and though we lost the semi we played with exactly the right spirit. Guildfordians Tournament 7th October 2007 This was the first competitive opportunity for the players from North and South who did themselves proud in four games although they did not make it through to the semi-finals. After losing the first game in a tense match they won the second. They lost the third match and were winning the last game until the final seconds when a late try by the opposition provided a draw - this followed a spell when they had two tries disallowed. What was most pleasing was the significant improvement made by all players as the tournament progressed which will hold them in good stead for future competitions. Waverley Tournament 30th September 2007
Farnham West represented Farnham U7’s in the A stream tournament and Farnham East represented Farnham U7’s in the B stream tournament. Farnham West won their first game against Guildford and then lost two very close games against Haslemere and Cranleigh, in both games the first half scores left them a lot to do, but with a strong will to win they narrowly lost them both by only on try. West squad came third. Farnham East won one and drew two games. They drew their first two games against Haslemere and Guildford and then won a most exciting decider against Cranleigh with a try in the last 10 seconds. Farnham East won their stream. Congratulations East, this is our first trophy! All players made a fantastic contribution to every game and were still smiling as they collected their trophies and medals.
Inter-Squad League last updated 30th September 2007 These matches are informal and only take place at training when there is no visiting team. The first round of trials saw North beat South 2-1 and East beat West 3-2 the second round saw East beat North 4-3 and West beat South 10-6 the third round saw East beat West 1-0
the fourth round saw East and North draw 1-1 and South beat West 2-1 So the league table looks something like this (just for fun!) East are still looking very strong, well done. | Team | P | W | D | L | F | A | Diff | Pts | | East | 3 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 9 | 6 | 3 | 7 | | North | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 6 | 6 | 0 | 3 | | West | 3 | 1 | 0 | 3 | 13 | 12 | 1 | 2 | | South | 2 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 9 | 13 | -4 | 2 |
