This website is designed to keep all those interested in what we are doing as a squad, well informed. The majority of the site is about fixtures, training session results, coaching sessions and tips and is aimed at the members of the squad, their parents and our legions of supporters!
If you are new to Farnham Rugby Club and contemplating whether you or your child should join in this great sport, then here is what we do:
-
MAIN CHANGES FROM JUNIOR RUGBY
-
15 a-side, full pitch, 25 minute each way, up to 22 a squad
The support infrastructure of minis falls away
We organise our own fixtures (David Bevan)
The kids get provided with match-day shirts
We organise our own catering/kit washing/refs etc
We have League and Friendly fixtures and one tournament
We organise our own tour (Dave Royan to lead, Karen Davis has volunteered to help, we will need more)
It gets more challenging and demanding
Coaching focuses on:
Continuing development of core skills and position-specific skills
Understanding of the principles of play and a "game sense" approach
Development of mental preparation
Goal setting and coping with winning and losing
-
SIMILARITIES TO MINIS
-
We play rugby to have fun and to develop the players
We try and coach them so they know how to win
It is first and foremost a team game and a team enterprise
The entire set-up relies on volunteers
-
RUGBY PLAYING SCHOOLS
-
As the game is more physical, the principle that we will work to is we will assume that players will not be available for Sunday fixtures following a Schools fixture on Saturday
Schools fixtures mid-week are assumed not to be a problem
This means that about 1/3 of the squad are unlikely to be available for fixtures until after Christmas
We would encourage these players to remain part of the squad by attending training sessions whenever they can
Assuming that they are able to attend a reasonable amount of training these players will be included in friendly fixtures around Christmas
This will enable us to select them in to the League squads, on merit, for the second half of the season
Any rugby playing school parents who are unhappy with this arrangement should speak to Martin/Tim
-
STRUCTURE OF SQUAD AND FIXTURES
-
We will run a squad of 60 plus players with 40 being available for fixtures up to Christmas and 60 plus thereafter.
This will provide enough for 2 teams pre-Christmas and 3 teams after Christmas
The fixture list is being designed to match this availability
An added complication is that we have to nominate our League squads in advance and a maximum of 2 cross-over’s is allowed
This means that we will have to select league squads for 2 teams through to Christmas in early October and in for 3 squads in January
Knowing availability for league games is therefore key
We will run training sessions that coach consistent themes across all squads but also focus on interactions within specific teams
KIT
Playing shirts for matches will be provided, you therefore have to have socks and shorts (last years are OK or buy from Berkeley sports)
You can train in existing tops, tour tops etc
Rob Mellor will be running a second hand kit stall in the first two weekends of the season please bring old stuff down (to Club)
HELP REQUIRED (please respond to Martin/Tim)
We need REFEREES, refs coaching courses will be provided in early part of the season (Dads, older brothers 16+ are very welcome)
We need a team of people to organise catering when we are on duty (6 weekends a year)
We need a team of Dads to ensure that the match-day experience is a great one for the boys (and the other Dads)
This “match-day Dad” will ensure: maximum support, correct off pitch attire for the team, appropriate sporting conduct off the field, kit recovered/washed/returned, catering team deliver. Without this support it will be difficult for us to achieve our coaching /rugby development aims as we will be involved in co-ordinating the background as opposed to coaching
We need to fund-raise for the new Club: all ideas welcome (all money even more so!)
We will need a tour committee
With all this help needed, I would expect almost every family can contribute in some way
Hopefully that excites you to register your interest with us. To do so you should e-mail Kim Stone() with the details of parent(s) name(s), phone numbers and e-mail and the name and date of birth of the player. Once we receive your registration of interest we will let you know if we are currently running a waiting list.
