Rugby legend coaches boys
It’s not everyday you get to meet one of your sporting heroes but recently that’s what happened to a group of 15 Farnham children with strong links to South Farnham school and Farnham RFC
They journeyed to Leicester for a personal rugby coaching session with World Cup winning captain, Martin Johnson. The experience was donated by Leicester Tigers to a local Farnham charity fund raising event. Clive Buesnel won the experience at the auction in aid of a al local Farnham girl, Georgia Head of Rowledge who is suffering from Cerebral Palsy. At the event over £40k was raised to enable her to receive a revolutionary muscle development treatment in Poland.
Clive’s son Jack and the other boys were treated to a rugby master class which lasted an hour and took place on the pitch at Welford Road, the home of league leaders Leicester ‘Tigers’, immediately before their sell out Guinness Premiership match with Harlequins.

The boys were put through their paces in a number of drills before playing a game. ‘Johno’ was involved in a hands-on fashion throughout and also gave lots of advice to some enthusiastic but very respectful participants. The former England great was impressed by what he saw of Farnham’s next generation of rugby players and hoped that some of them would go on to follow in the famous footsteps of his ex-team mate ( and Farnham boy) Jonny Wilkinson. After the hour long training session on the pitch, Johno joined in with a game of touch rugby with the boys … we needed to make sure the boys were gentle with Johnno. At the end of the session Martin signed lots of autographs for the boys and these will help keep alive the memory of a very special day.
Afterwards the boys – mostly Under 9’s - and parents were treated to some excellent hospitality by the home club and together watched a very exciting Premiership match (which Leicester won 27 v 22).
Overall a huge thanks to Leicester Tigers and ‘Johno’ for an unforgetable experience promoting youth Rugby and all for a very good cause.
Additional donations to the above charity were made by the young players’ proud parents. Any readers donations can be sent directly to Cancer Research at http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/ or by calling into the local Cancer Research shop.
