Gosport & Fareham kicked off at the start of the match, and within a short period of time had points on the board following some inept Farnham tackling that resulted in a converted try. Pleasingly Farnham responded immediately, when Jonny Andrews made a great burst on the wing deep into the opposition 22, and following a number of good phases of forward driving, Andrews was on hand to score a well deserved try. Despite the score occurring out wide, Andy James nailed a great conversion, to tie the scores.
Farnham then continued to attack, and dominated the rest of the half, with some good play from both backs and forwards alike. Pleasingly Farnham played with an intensity and intelligence that has not been seen very often this season, with players getting many of the basics right. On a number of occasions Farnham set up good positions in the Gosport 22, but despite having both 5m scrum chances, and a number of attacking lineouts the Gosport defence just about held out. Following a good chip and chase in midfield Andy James set up the position from which Farnham were awarded a kickable penalty, but unfortunately his attempt drifted just wide.
At half time Gosport could feel relieved to be level in a game that Farnham were dominating, but Farnham could feel well pleased with their recovery after the poor start. The message from the coaches was to keep playing as they were doing, but for the Farnham players to have a little more composure in the final third of the field. Farnham also discussed the need to re-organise more quickly in defence after the initial tackle situation, and for the forwards to adopt lower body positions in contact.
Farnham kicked off the second half with high hopes of building their first half performance into a much needed win, but inexplicably they switched off and stopped doing what hade been effective in the first half. Whilst Gosport raised the intensity of their game, Farnham, and the forwards in particular, went to sleep, allowing Gosport to walk away with the game. Tries were conceded through poor defensive organisation, and when the young Gosport 2nd row galloped in for a try from inside his own half without a Farnham player getting near to him, the Farnham supporters groaned at the ineptitude of their own team. Flanker Dean Chiverton was one of the few Farnham players who could hold his head high, having tackled his heart out throughout, and for still chasing back in the dying minutes to execute a fine cover tackle to prevent another score.
The final score finished Farnham 7 Gosport & Fareham 40. This was another disappointing result for Farnham, but what was even more depressing was the way in which the team folded in the 2nd half after having been the better team for most of the 1st half. Individually the players need to take a long hard look at their own performances, and in particular they need to start to work on their own fitness outside of club training sessions to ensure that they can compete throughout the duration of the match.
