Young Bucks Fizz
Cranleigh 9 March 2008

After a weekend of flat uninspired rugby from their international role models, Farnham Academy brought some champagne moments to their league fixture at Cranleigh, winning by 41 points to 10 in the bright sunlight of Sunday morning.

The first quarter of the match saw some sparkling handling and support work with Farnham seizing the initiative from the kick off.

Flanker James Morris and full-back Gabe Hills both crossed for tries following slick inter-passing and determined running. Skipper and fly half Ben Rubio converted both tries – the latter with a nonchalant drop kick.

Winger Dom Parker then completed two thirds of what was eventually to become his hat-trick of tries as the Farnham backs exploited a rich vein of possession.

With a 24 -0 lead Farnham lost their way in the latter stages of the first half and “took their foot off the gas”. After failing to clear their line with simple direct clearances, Farnham gifted 5 points Cranleigh allowing them to score a try from short range.

Farnham regained their focus after half time enabling Parker to complete his hat trick of tries this one converted by skipper Rubio.  Rubio himself and centre Rob West both added further unconverted scores; the latter gaining some compensation for an earlier disallowed effort.

Cranleigh snatched a further consolation try as Coach Geoff Bond rang the changes to give league fixture experience to the full complement of 7 substitutes.

The breadth and scope of the skills on display showed encouraging signs for the Academy as it fights for top spot in the league. Basic skills and commitment to free flowing rugby graced a pleasant day with credit going to all 22 Farnham players and also to Cranleigh in a well tempered match played and refereed in a good spirit.

Man of the match Joe Curran again won many of the “hard yards” that set up the Farnham scores. Meanwhile the spectators will long remember the jinking, swerving, side-stepping run from Joe’s front row partner Hector Hoyte–Bone.
