Welcome to the new season!

2008/2009 Match reports for Farnham 3rd XV

Farnham Rugby Club

Annual Sevens Tournament 2009

The standard of play at the Farnham Sevens keeps getting stronger and stronger, and this year was no exception as 28 teams contested the main and social competitions. The gods were smiling on all who took part, as the early morning rain helped just to soften up the pitch a little, before bright sunshine ensured that both the players and spectators could enjoy the spectacle in front of them.

In the Main competition, Chiswick reached the final by defeating the Stallions in their semi-final, whilst in the other half of the draw SEME, Bordon overcame the challenge of the Magnificent 7. The final promised to be a close run affair between two very good sevens sides, but SEME started strongly, and before Chiswick had woken up the game was as good as over. Chiswick did battle back to score, but SEME deserved their title.

In the Plate competition last year’s winners the Riders overcame Holbrook from Sussex to set up a final against Cobham, who had overcome local team Farnborough. After a slow start to the competition Cobham had played progressively good rugby, and they were too strong for their opponents to secure the much cherished toilet seat trophy.

The social competition was played for by 12 teams, with Trefforest Titans defeating Sussex All Stars to win the Vase, whilst Southampton University Old Boys beat the Stags to win the Bowl competition.

Throughout the day a number of volunteers ran the table, bar, and barbecue, and “Fit” Mick Dawson deserves particular praise for providing medical support to the needy. The club was well served by a number of its own members who refereed a significant number of the matches, and again teenage club member Ashley Tomlinson deserves great credit for both the number and standard of matches that he officiated.

With the senior playing season now finished, the members can look forward to the Presentation Evening taking place at Blacknest Golf Club on the 9th May, before having a well earned break. Pre-season training will start back at the club on Tuesday 7th July, and any new players would be made most welcome (contact Club Captain Karl Brown 07795490922 or simply turn up).

Farnham 3rd XV 30 – 16 Chobham 4th XV 28.03.09

Farnham started the game well and within minutes had a penalty awarded within kicking distance, and Rob Cooper stepped up and took the 3 points. For the next twenty minutes it was close, but the home sides scrum was strong and several times the opposition were forced backwards. With 10 minutes left of the half, Chobham broke the Farnham line and scored in the corner.  Conversion missed.

After some silly mistakes Farnham conceded a penalty to give Chobham another 3 points, but Farnham got themselves back in the game with a try from Ant Bartram.  Making the first half score 8 – 10.

With a stern talk about first up tackles and how to control the ruck and maul the home side started the second half at a fast pace but with some good old ruck and maul the forwards took the ball some 40 meters and passed the ball down the line for Stu to score on his debut. Coops missed the conversion but it did not stop there.

For 5 minutes Farnham switched off and Chobham scored two more penalties giving them 16 points.

Farnham were not finished though and started to up their performance and managed to score 2 tries themselves through Sid Cranstone and Rob Cooper. Coops converted and with a further 3 points from a penalty Farnham won 30 – 16.

All 16 players were on a high with a well deserved win thanks to all and look forward to the last league match of the season.,

Don’t forget the players’ supper 4th April, tickets from Andy stent next week.

 Farnham 3rd XV 12 – 30 Kingston mixed 14.03.09

With a considerable number of injuries and non availability this weekend, Farnham took a largely 3rd team side to Kingston, hoping to give Keith Moore a good performance before his new job prevents him from playing on Saturdays.

Having lost the toss Farnham began the match playing down the hill, and when Kingston kicked off the ball was caught cleanly by Ben Murphy, before going through several phases. Chris Dury, back from a shoulder injury and playing at scrum half, kept the team going forwards with plenty of chat, and although the initial Farnham surges were well defended, Farnham could feel very pleased with their excellent start. A series of strong drives on Kingston put ins to the scrum saw Farnham snaffle plenty of ball, and with some fantastic breaks from Ben Murphy, Dave Stent and Dury the backs saw plenty of ball on the front foot. Unfortunately Farnham failed to capitalize on this excellent start, and some poor tackling allowed Kingston to score an unconverted try in the corner. Undeterred Farnham went straight back at their opponents, but further defensive lapses saw Kinston break away to score a second unconverted try.

A good scrum saw Murphy again pick up and following some good rucking and mauling the ball was given to flying winger Rav who made it almost to the line before a desperate tackle from the fullback saw the ball dislodged from his hands. Unfortunately Ben Murphy had to leave the field with a damaged ankle, and whilst the Farnham team were reorganising Kingston broke to score another try. Finally Farnham scored a well taken try of their own to give them hope for the 2nd half.

The second half started how the first half finished with both sides playing good rugby and with Farnham now making their first up tackles they had a chance of getting back into the game. Rav broke several more times to leave Kingston’s defense in tatters, and  James Corlett, Phil Ellis and Keith Moore also made good ground. Some good tactical kicking helped Rav to eventually score a well deserved try, but Kingston also then helped themselves to further scores to run out convincing winners at the end. A good performance despite the loss, and if Farnham improve their defense at the start of matches they will win matches like this in the future.

We started with not having a full side and with the help of all players we rallied around and left with 14 to face a tough contest against a very strong side. We would play for ten minutes with 14 but with Steve coming from work we were soon up to full strength, that did not help as before he came we were 20 nil down and that was through strength from there pack which proved to much for Farnham.

Farnham 3rd XV 0 – 80 Sutton & Epsom 4th XV 21.02.09

We played fits of good rugby keeping it tight but it was clear to see that we had lost the battle, and to add insult to injury Farnham were carrying some injury's and to that woody spoke to Ref at half time and ended up the second half going un contested which spoils the game. How ever we did play Rugby and looked like scoring but it just was not Farnham's day.

There are lessons to be learn from this and with that in mind we need to turn up to training, ball handling skills and keeping the ball tight. Not to mention first up tackles. This goes out to all Rugby players from Farnham, I think at times we play to fast and forget to slow game down. There is not a lot to say about this game but we went there and got beat far and square, my thanks goes out to all fifteen players who turned up and held there heads high thanks.  Although Coops kicking was slightly off every player did there best and lets look forward to the Friendly game next week, and the all important Curry night at the Mulberry 28th 1900 hrs.

Farnham 3rd XV 0 – 10 Aldershot & Fleet 2nd XV 14.02.09

Farnham 3rd XV started the day with a well organised warm up that enabled them to come together before the game knowing full well what was expected of them and the game plan they were to play to. All went well before returning to the changing rooms to give that all important final speech from Woody and pack leader Murph. The 2nd team skipper Keith Moore gave that extra final chat to get the boys really fired up.

The home side lost the toss and kicked to a well organised Aldershot & Fleet team. It was clear to see that there was rugby to be played by both teams on a sticky, muddy and heavy pitch. This was not going to be an easy game with a lot of end to end rugby from both sides.

There were some silly penalties from both sides and with a certain penalty awarded to Farnham they decided to go for goal; up stepped Keith Moore but with a blowing wind the ball went just inches wide.

Farnham should have been 6- 0 ahead but another missed penalty summed up the Farnham performance and lack of luck. This did not dampen the home side’s spirits and they upped their game and played on to finish the first half on a high.

The talk at half time was honest from all 15 players and there was a strong consensus that the front 5 needed to work their way into the game and they should target the scrum area and really up their game. With this in mind changes were made to the Farnham front row. With both sides having now caught their breath it was clear to see a score from either side was imminent.

A lapse in the Farnham defence saw the backs from Aldershot & Fleet skip through some poor defending to score in the corner giving them a five point lead. Heads did not go down and some encouraging words saw the next ten minutes of rugby played at a fast pace with rucks and mauls being turned over for both sides.

Farnham looked to be in with a scoring chance with minutes to go, but it was not to be their day, and with a scrum turned over in the opposition half Aldershot & Fleet put some good phases of rugby together to finish with another try to make the final score 0 - 10.

A thought for future games boys; we need to be tight when the ball is in and out of play, and remember defence is key. Thanks to all those old and new players. Looking forward to the next league game next week against Sutton and Epsom. The 3xv's had a walk over Win for the league game. Today's game was a friendly. Once again thanks a good game of clean Rugby.

  Farnham 3rd XV 10 - Esher 6th XV 31 31.01.09

The day started with us fighting for the changing rooms as we had three home games, but that was not all; our ref was late by twenty minuets as he had mistaken the football pitch for the rugby pitches.

Once we kicked of we all were a bit anxious due to the wait how ever it did not dampen our spirits and with several new players in the squad we soon had a breakaway were the new winger James Cooke chipped there back row players and got to within two meters but could not get through there full back, we recycled the ball and then was penalized for not releasing a real shame. The next twenty minutes or so was end to end stuff with both sides having breaks but the Ref did not help making wrong decisions etc. The half time score was 12 Esher and Farnham 0.

The only thing that dampened the first half was the crunching tackle made by Esher's Fly half on our Fly half Coops, with play stopping for the injury and making sure that Coops was good and finding a back replacement and with thanks to Gav and the vets we were able to fill a full side.

The second half started much the same as the first half finished with end to end stuff.

Unfortunately Esher had a couple of breaks and putting there score up to 31 Esher, how ever due to Two players finishing today and going away we decided to pull our socks up even more and move into six gear. We had a penalty awarded and with Goffy converting gave us 3 points. then the next ten minutes was Farnham best rugby with a wonderful throw from The skipper (Woody) to Mac who caught the ball drove on a few meters then releasing the ball to the scrum half and allowing Goffy to slice through there backs to score under the posts with the conversion as well gave us ten points.

We still had five mins left we upped the pace even more but they proved to be a bit to strong and we lost a league match, how ever once the game had fished we all had high spirits and even the vets replacement said it was a pleasure to play for the thirds as we have that special bond to ensure that the Rugby is played with enjoyment and enthusiasm and spirit. So big thanks goes to the players who turned up last min and played with high spirit thanks.

There was no man of the Match as I thought the whole team played there hearts out and with all forwards fantastic even Sid who kept his calm thanks, to the backs who all performed great work lads. Look forward to next week and a friendly against Guildfordians away meet at 1245 for a two thirty kick of.

Farnham 3's 10 – 10 Alton 3's/Vets

Farnham started with all good enthusiasm having two subs on the bench that gave them experience and pace. From the off Farnham meant well and were driving forward not over committing and using the whole width of the pitch. This fixture was not going to be an easy one as both sides have a history and Alton like the more physical attributes of the game.

With fifteen minutes gone Farnham were awarded a penalty for a high tackle which Nigel Rooney scored giving them a three point lead.  With some injury's on board Farnham made two changes and they kept on pressing into the opposition half and with minutes to half time the forwards set up a ruck and maul situation which Paul Keogh, Mike Richards and Al Hooton took some twenty meters to stop before off loading to the backs and putting Josh in to score in the corner, Nigel Rooney converted giving the home team a ten nil lead.

The second half started as the first had finished but it was clear to see that the game was getting dirty and soon it would not be long before yellow cards or red cards would be issued.

Alton had several breaks but with good defence from Farnham it took several phases for the opposition to score. The ball appeared to be held up but the try was awarded, to make the score 10 – 5.

The next 10 minutes were extremely physical with both teams fighting for possession. Unfortunately for Farnham the referee caught Al Hooton retaliating to some over eager Alton defending, which resulted in him being sent off. Down to fourteen men Farnham held on until the last few minutes, and with a missed penalty for the home side and a further try from Alton the game finished 10 – 10.

Once again thanks for the guts and determination from all players and look forward to next weeks League match away to Warlingham (Boys let have a win)

Farnham 3’s 0 – 55 Chobham 4s 20.12.08

We had lost a few of the regular players but we went to Chobham with 17 players, we had our usual team talk and run through as we had not played for some three weeks due to game cancellations. Although Christmas spirits we high there was a doubt in my mind that this was not going to be an easy game.

The ref turned up and i new straight away that we were in for a hard afternoon. We lost the toss and kicked of and from the off we gave 110 % in every aspect of the game, from rucks to malls, line outs and some scrums. Although they had some 100 plus kilos on us in the scrum we tried to lock out and stop the push, it worked some times.

The defense line was good but they soon had the edge, with us over committing in the rucks they soon broke our back line and the first half they put some 6 tries past us to give them a half time score of 30 nil, how ever we did have some penalties awarded to us which coops missed by a whisker.

Second half came and we started the as we left of strong and taking the ball up some two or three phases which did give us some good distance, how ever we did get penalties that we tried to take advantage of but somehow did not work. although we carried on persevering playing good old fashion rugby we just could not get a score on the board, (very frustrating).

We had a spell of ten mins we our heads went down and they scored 4 more tries but there kicker was not on form today so there points were kept to a minimum. we all worked and never gave up at all, but with five mins to go we were down to fourteen men, as i used the two subs, so coops hat to be carried of with his hamstring, we played and never coincided any points which was good, how ever the ref should have sent the prop of that punched and gashed my head (good blood injury) but a big thanks to all the players who turned up, may all of you have a good Christmas and be ready for the new year were we need to build on our performance to get those all important wins we deserve.

Next Trg session will be Tuesday 3rd Jan 2009 and our next game is Sat 10th Jan at home. see you all there.

Farnham 3rd XV 5 – 0 Dorking 3rd XV 06.12.08

With the lack of a 2's game this week Farnham were able to borrow a few players from the second team and field a full side plus a few subs for a change. Farnham were feeling pretty confident, but Dorking were still going to be a challenge, having lost twice to them in league encounters last season.

As the game started it became obvious that the sides were evenly matched as we slogged it out in the muddy conditions. Indiscipline from Farnham gave Dorking a couple of penalty opportunities within sight of the posts which fortunately they failed to convert.

The second half began with Farnham coming out the stronger side, increasing the pressure on Dorking and playing within the oppositions half for a long period, which finally led to the only score of the game. A long, but not particularly accurate pass from fly half Paddy King managed to find new boy James Corlett on the wing, who managed to use his pace and strength to dive in at the corner for his debut try. From this difficult position Dan Beattie couldn't convert the try, giving Farnham a narrow 5-0 lead.

The last twenty minutes of the game became a role reversal, with Dorking fighting back strongly and becoming firmly entrenched in the Farnham half. Farnham's defence held firm despite giving away several penalties, but they still defended strongly. Even when Dorking managed to carry the ball over the line there was no chance of them actually grounding it.  Farnham managed to hold out Dorking and grind down the clock, as the ball was kicked into touch for last play of the game.

Dorking were good opposition and the low scoreline only illustrates how close and hard fought the game was as neither side let their game drop. The poor tackling that Farnham had shown in past weeks was not in evidence here as everyone played well and tackled hard, without exception. In such a side it was hard to find a man of the match, but Brad Mitchell in the backs and Keiran Stewart in the forwards both stood out for the shear number of tackles they made as well as their strength, both in attack and defence.

Farnham 3’s 5 – 55 Old Walcountians 3’s 15.11.08

A disappointing turn out of players for the thirds this week meant we went to Old Walcountians with only 11 players. This meant we had to forfeit our possible league points and borrow players from the opposition in order to have a game.

Our side was a bit mix and match, with our shortage of numbers especially in key positions and trying to fit in the players we were lent, meant many of our players were playing out of position. Farnham made a good start initially with our forwards driving into the opposition and making good yards, but not being able to retain the ball to well.

Old Walcountians then spotted our full back out of position and chipped over to enable their backs to run through and score their first try. This try was soon followed by others as the home team realised their advantage having a young fast set of backs as opposed to our backs which were mostly players who usually play in the forwards, or backs not playing in their usual positions. Despite a brave defence by Farnham, we were leaking points as the opposition backs made there advantage tell.

The second half began as the first had ended with Old Walcountians further extending their lead. Farnham didn’t give up though and put up some decent defence towards the end of the game and were rewarded  5 minutes from time when, Mike Richards showed an uncharacteristic turn of speed making a break down the blindside, but lacked the pace to make it to the line on his own. Fortunately James Frost was there in support to finish the move scoring a conciliatory try.  Frosty failed to convert the try and there was no further score in the game.

Thanks to Old Walcountians for lending us players and still providing us with a game despite our lack of players. Thanks also to the players who did turn out for us especially Sam who was roped in at the last minute. Hopefully we will have a lot better turn out for next weeks friendly against Lightwater, so could any available player please make sure they let one of the team captains know during the week, to ensure we put out a strong side.

Farnham 3’s 19 – 0 Old Rutshilians 08.11.08

After an up and down week we finally got the opposition to play a good old fashion game of rugby in wet and muddy conditions.

We were due to kick of at 1 pm but it was clear to see with only 2 opposition that this would not be the case. This did not dampen our spirits as we were fully prepared for battle. Eventually we kicked of some forty Min's late and what a start we got!!; from our kick off we dominated the rucks and mauls and then the test came our first scrum, we also dominated here with the likes of Andy Jones, Eric and Tank as the front three, Sid and Jason second row and Andy Couts, Jo Curran and Ross McCabe on the bench. We drove them back some 10 yards and popped the ball out, with follow up play from forwards Tank got the ball and went over under the posts. No one claimed to kick as we were all on a high, so big Sid got the ball and converted to give us 7 point lead.

The next twenty Min's saw us have several scrums and pick ups from Woody, Mark Kingsley and Mike Williams to go over the line but with the muddy wet conditions we dropped or slipped so yes guys we missed about 6 to 7 tries. (SORRY LADS) However our heads did not drop and we kept on driving and all was plain to see with the forwards dominating a fab game.

Dave Stent went over after he ripped the ball from one of the Old Rut’s players to score, Mike Williams wanted a go at the posts and missed, half time it was 12 - 0 to the Trojans (Farnham 3rds).

We started the second half as we finished the first, dominating the lines outs, scrums and open play, we saw some brilliant runs with plenty of support and keeping the depth for those all important runs.

This paid off and Andy Stent went over from a blistering run to break their defence, Mike Williams wanted to make up for his previous attempt and score he did. The Final score was 19 - 0 to Trojans.

The match was a well thought game of hard Rugby in perfect muddy conditions and even though we ended up lending Jo Curran and Ross McCabe to the opposition it was clear to see who the better pack was on the day. Big thanks goes out to Bob Smith for running around to get us the fixture and not to mention all the players who all gave 100%, even with the slip ups and slight mistakes we all played a fantastic game.

All though there was no man of the match nominated there were a lot of D**K of the day nominations, but i think we hold our hands up to those mistakes so no fines apart from the captain(Woody) who will bring the port for next game, and beer for those none port drinkers.

Final score was 19 - 0 to Farnham, 3 tries Tank, Dave and Andy Stent, two conversions Sid and Mike Williams. A lot of positives from the game and good to see some old players Paddy king, and we look forward to building on the relationship we have built within the thirds, guys we have the players and we will carry on to get all those important wins.

Farnham 3’s 5 - 33 Warlingham 3’s 01.11.08

A match of glorious running Champagne rugby match played in perfect sunshine! Well maybe not.

The rain was lashing down, it was cold, wet and horrible, did it bother us? No, not a bit.  Everyone turned up eventually adding a bit of pressure on a day when the Ref was insistent upon a strict 2.30pm start.

A slow start in shocking conditions, heads to wind and rain meant that within 10 minutes we were 10 points down but this was more to do with the conditions and a possible lack of control on the floor – STOP kicking the ball in the loose boys! Rather than the dreaded “Farnham-itis” where we take 10 mins to wake up!

Heads into shocking conditions meant we chose to stick the ball up the jumpers and some good periods of strong Forward play were unlucky not to be rewarded with some well deserved points. A well drilled Warlingham pack produced some strong running play where they made good ground and ran in a couple of tries.

Into the 2nd half  heads were held high and we kept on battling after a period of traditional pick-and-go Farnham rugby we found ourselves on the Warlingham 22 yard line, Kieran Stewart picked and went, the forwards recycled and again glory boy Stewart picked and drove well for a well deserved try. An extremely close conversion attempt followed with Andy Williamson hitting the upright.

A gritty 30 minutes followed of hard core rugby played in a mud-bath. Again after the final whistle 15 blokes deservedly congratulated each other on not giving up against a well drilled side, a ref who apologised for having a shocker and all bodes well for the future.

Worthy mentions go to –

Front Three – never went back all game and won a few of their angular put in’s.

2nd Row - Jason even made a blistering run, Kieran scored, ‘nuff said, Vince hard as nails as always.

Back Row- Woody can keep his role as Capt he’s welcome to it, too much like hard work. Grant – good tackling.

Scrum Half - Andy W thanks for helping out in strong Vice-Captain role.

Backs- Good running & hands in tough conditions especially in the centres especially Marky-Mark & Taff Hildreth. Will and Josh great running in rubbish conditions.

Those not mentioned – Well done, good hard game.

Farnham 3rd's are nearly fit & healthy but by god we try bloody hard, well done lads, thanks for all your support on the pitch - really looking forward to next week.

Mike Richards, Stand-in Captain who with a record of one game as losing Captain retires gracefully to allow Woody & Stenty to do all the real work sorting us lot out!!

Farnham 3’s 19 - 24 Esher 6th 25.10.08

I thought we would never have a team with players dropping like flies (man flu), but thanks to Keith and Gav we took 16 players to Esher and the spirit was up. With Tank giving us some good old songs in the changing room and Coops saying "Please can I go on the slide", we were ready for a big battle. We have always come to Esher and they have always put more than twenty points over us.

From the off we were playing like true Trojans with all the forwards taking the ball in to contact and presenting well, we were able to recycle and have some good old fashion rugby. With 10 minutes gone Farnham broke the back line and Coops scored under the posts and converted his own try.  Esher tried to come back but could not break our defence.

With minutes left to go in the half Esher got a penalty and a dubious try was scored and converted to take us into the break at 7 – 7.

The 2nd half started like the first and Farnham scored within 5 minutes of the re-start, the forwards had 5 phases of good rugby and Mike Richards’s side stepped their fly half to score under the posts. Unfortunately Coops hit the post. Later in the half Esher made some changes and broke our defensive line to score a try in the corner.

With the score at 12 – 12 our heads went down for a short spell and Esher scored 2 further tries, giving them the lead at 24 – 12.

A Stern talking too and some harsh words from the ref to both sides and it was Esher's turn for heads to go down. With Farnham turning up the pressure we were constantly pushing with all involved and this paid off with Kieran Stewart going over under the posts for a fantastic try, created by all forwards, Tommy converted to give us a score of 24 - 19 to Esher at the final whistle.

A lot of positives to come from this game and it’s nice to see that Farnham 3rd's are getting the same players week in week out to enable the team to gel together and play some fantastic rugby. Please keep supporting us and wins will come. Look forward to seeing all at training on Tuesdays and Thursdays to iron out minor problems. Heads should be held high after a fabulous performance. Thank you to all.

Farnham 3’s 18 – 5 Fluor 18.10.08

Well the day started well with twenty players turning up and some old faces returning which is good to see, also new faces.

We lost the toss but chose to play into the wind, that was a good choice, from the off Farnham's hearts, mind and soul were in this match, I think it was carried on from the previous week's win.

We spent most of the forty minutes in their half, however they did break our line occasionally. With twenty minutes gone we had our first chance to put points on the board and Coops converted it to give us a three point lead. Three minutes to go and we had another chance to extend our lead, but Coops sliced the ball to just miss the bar, so going into half time we were 3 - 0 up.

A good talking too and plenty of courage we plodded on and started the second half as we left off. With sixty five minutes played Woody(c) got the ball and with nothing to do kicked but their players picked up and broke the line and scored in the corner, with the Captain of Fluor missing the conversion they were leading 5 - 3.

We had a good chat and ten minutes left we upped the pace and the forwards took the ball up several phases and eventually broke the back line of Fluor and scored under the posts (New lad Josh) with Coops converting we were 10 - 5 up, this did not stop there we did the same again and our other new lad Brad scored on his debut but Coops failed to convert, that was that the final whistle was 15 - 5 to the Farnham (Spartans).

A mention needs to go out to the mighty Tank, Mike, Jason and all the players for digging in and coming out victorious. Well done lads look forward to next week against Esher League match, lets get maximum attendance.

Becs Old Boys 0 - 5 Farnham 3's

The Third team had the luxury of fielding a full squad for the first time this season, which was a novelty especially for an away game. After a bit on confusion about where were playing we finally arrived at Bec Old Boys new ground, with enough time to warm up and get organised.

We started the first half facing down hill on the sloping pitch, but with the sun in our eyes. Both teams seemed to be fairly evenly matched in the first half, with both teams getting close but solid defence by both sides preventing any scores. The nearest coming from a failed drop goal attempt by Chris Panton and Bec Old Boys mistaking the 5 Metre line for the try line.

The second half started in much the same way, with both sides well matched despite Farnham having made 4 changes. As the half wore on dogged determination started to turn to frustration and tempers started to flare, with a few incidents. Farnham managed to keep the better of the discipline though, which seemed to work to our advantage with Ref and Farnham were camped within the Bec 22 for a large part of the last quarter.

With time running out, it took a solo effort from Adam Hailstones to work his way through the opposition  to score in the corner. The conversion was narrowly missed from this difficult position and was the last action of the game, giving Farnham a narrow, but welcome win.

Farnham 3’s 3 – 55 Sutton and Epsom 4’s

The Game started at pace with both sides having equal possession, but as the game went on Sutton & Epsom’s superior knowledge within the backs proved to be too much for our backs. Although we had 17 players and 13 of which were forwards and people playing out of position our heads did not drop and it was with pace that Sutton eventually broke our back line and scored in the corner. With a penalty awarded to Farnham Andy Williamson got a well deserved 3 points. That was not it; a bit of shoddy work and missed tackles they broke the back line before half time.

A few changes were made and a little team talk we came out fighting and again proved that we could hold our own but it was not to be Farnham’s day and several tries later we were out. The game was getting heated towards the end but we did not give up and a few harsh decisions from the ref did not enable Farnham to get any more points.

There is a lot of positives coming from our game which we can put into practice at Trg but a big thanks to all those who turned up and look forward to out next Match Sat 11th Away to Bec Old boys, Farnham lets improve.

Farnham 3’s 12 – 12 Old Reigations 3’s 27.09.08

We managed to put out a full team this week with even the luxury of a single sub, with a bit of help from the Vets. Farnham started the game strongly, dominating in the scrum which we maintained throughout the game. We slipped up early on with a few too many missed tackles allowing Reigations to run though us and score, although with appeals from the Farnham players that the ball was not grounded properly, a video ref would have come in very handy.

Farnham then started to wake up and had possession and field position for most of the half, but failed to convert it into points. We Started the second half a try down, but continued from where we left the first half and concerted pressure from the whole team finally lead to acting skipper Andy Stent going over in the corner for our first try, which was then converted by Rob Cooper. A few minutes later Farnham scored again in almost the same position, with newcomer Richard Thompson at full back finishing off a great passage of play from the backs.

The rest of the half saw Farnham give away a lot of field position, due to some unlucky kicks and bit of poor discipline. This lead to Reigatians being camped on our 5, which we defended well for a while, but ultimately led to the opposition breaking through and levelling the score. With only a few minutes left on the clock Farnham tried to up the pace again, but time wasn’t on our side and we had to be content with a draw.

It was a good performance from Farnham, but we left the pitch felling we should have won, if it hadn’t been for a few missed tackles and other mistakes on our part. We still did well considering the number of players we had playing out of position, especially our odd 9 & 10 pairing of Mark Kinglsey and Rob Cooper.

Farnham 3’s 12 – 43 Battersea Ironsides 4’s 20.09.08

The score line in this case really doesn’t tell the whole story.  Despite there being no vet’s game and the 2nd team game being cancelled earlier in the day we really struggled for numbers and after many frantic phone calls trying to rope in whoever we could, we finally turned up at Ironsides with 13 players. We had the option of forfeiting the league points, evening the sides up and just playing a friendly, but we decided to try and play for the points,  and were glad we had. We got of to a great start and went 12-0 up in the first ten minutes thanks to tries from Sticky and Ralph Gordon, with Sticky converting one of the tries. It was at this point that Ironsides seemed to realise we were two men down and started to exploit the overlap and we finished the half 12-14 down but still in the firm belief that we could win. The second half saw the Ironsides bring on a couple of fresh subs a luxury we didn’t have and despite a couple close scoring opportunities, we were tiring and getting stretched even thinner allowing Ironsides to take advantage and pull ahead. The final blow came 10 minutes from time when Kieran Marshall went down with a shoulder injury and although he tried to bravely continue, we were left with only 12 players and were stretched to far allowing Ironsides to run in 3 tries in the dying minutes. The fact that we were leading for most of the first half and made Ironsides work for everything with us disrupting their lineout’s and even managing to win a few scrums against the head with our lack of numbers shows the strength and determination of our players. Everyone played well, and gave everything they could. I couldn’t ask anymore of any of them making it impossible to pick a man of the match in a side like this. We had strong debuts for the club from Chris Marsden and Chris Panton, as well as Jonny Andrews getting closer to his ambition of playing every position on the field, stepping in at scrum half. We did have a “d**k of the day” award though for Julian Rangers most panicked penalty ever! I’d also like to give a special mention to Tom Gough, who just turned up at the club to deliver some kit and ended up getting roped in to playing for us in borrowed kit.

Farnham RFC Pre-Season Tour to Stroud

A sign of the positive atmosphere being created by Farnham RFC was the attendance of nearly 30 players on a pre-season training weekend to Stroud RFC over the weekend of 29th - 31st August. The weekend was superbly organised by Graeme Black and Mark (Woody) Woodward, and saw the players taking part in a coaching session on the Saturday morning, before playing four twenty minute matches against Stroud in the afternoon. This format allowed both teams to look at various combinations and tactics, and despite the chopping and changing of personnel, some excellent rugby was played, with Stroud shading the honours. Following some team bonding in Cirencester on the Saturday night, the two teams played a further full match on the Sunday morning, with Farnham winning 27 points to 15. Adam Hailstones, Keith Moore, Fran Meager, Mark Woodward, and Deane Chiverton all scored tries, whilst two of the tries were converted. Chiverton was Farnham’s man of the match in the Saturday games, whilst Andy Stent played particularly well on the Sunday, and Steve Simmonds was awarded Tourist of the Weekend for his excellent playing performances and strong contributions to the various team building activities that went on.

These are exciting times for Farnham, with several new players on the scene, excellent attendance at training, and a fantastic team spirit building. The players are keen to improve and are receptive to advice offered, and the Stroud experience has given the coaching team lots of positives to build on. The pre-season programme continues on Tuesday nights at the club and on Thursday nights on the Polo Fields in Aldershot, with both training sessions starting at 7.15p.m. New players are welcome to attend by simply turning up, or by contacting Club Captain Karl Brown (07795490922) for further information.
